Desire it. That being so, it is impossible for a single wisdom to focus on both name and meaning. Therefore, the part that focuses on name becomes the wisdom arising from hearing, and the part that focuses on meaning becomes the wisdom arising from meditation, so it is impossible to generate the wisdom arising from thinking that focuses on both name and meaning. This is what Master Yixing said. Therefore, the wisdom arising from listening to trustworthy teachings is hearing, the wisdom arising from determining the meaning of what is heard through reasoning is thinking, and the wisdom arising from meditating single-mindedly on the meaning of what is thought is meditation. These are also, in order, the wisdom that finds certainty in meaning based solely on sound, based on reasoning, and the wisdom that finds certainty in meaning through the power of meditation without relying on sound concepts. Second, if you want to know on what basis these wisdoms of hearing, thinking, and meditation are generated, in terms of the body, whether householders or renunciates, etc., keep away from the hustle and bustle of idle talk, and keep away from distractions such as inappropriate attention, then these yogas will arise. If you are not satisfied with just old robes and poor food, and you are greedy for better and more things, then the yoga of the path of hearing, thinking, and meditation will not arise. Third, it is impossible for the noble path to arise while abiding in the eight worldly dharmas. In order to be in harmony with the arising of the noble path, one should abandon the eight worldly dharmas. That is to say, being happy when you get profit and unhappy when you don't get it; experiencing comfortable happiness and experiencing painful unhappiness; hearing pleasant and unpleasant words; being happy and unhappy when praised to your face and slandered behind your back, these are called the eight worldly dharmas. They should be abandoned with an equal mind. In the Suhrllekha it says: "The worldly wise say, gain and no gain, pleasure and pain, pleasant and unpleasant, praise and blame, these are the eight worldly dharmas. May you treat them with equanimity and not let them disturb your mind." Fourth, having abandoned the adverse conditions, the eight worldly dharmas, in order to cultivate favorable conditions, one must learn the twelve qualities. In order to counteract attachment to food, one should

Not holding more than one day's food is being an almsman; not getting up from the seat where food is started, eating as much as one wants, and not eating after getting up from the seat is being a single-seater; initially accepting as much food as one wants, and not eating even if someone offers more later, is not taking later, these are three. As an antidote to attachment to clothing, not being satisfied with any other clothing except the three Dharma robes, namely the sanghati, the upper robe, and the kasaya, is being a three-Dharma-robe wearer; wearing Dharma robes made entirely of coarse wool is being a felt-wearer; not wearing new clothes that are not suitable for the season, only wearing worn-out clothes that are suitable for the season, or sewing discarded rags into Dharma robes and wearing them is being a rag-wearer, these are three. As an antidote to attachment to dwelling, building a hut one yojana away from the village and living there, not living in the village or other monasteries, is being a monastery-dweller; living in a cemetery, subsisting only on the shrouds of corpses in the cemetery and the food offered to the corpses, is being a cemetery-dweller; living under the trees of the monastery is being a tree-dweller; living in a roofless hut in the monastery is being a roofless-dweller, these are four. As an antidote to attachment to bedding, not frequently changing the bedding, keeping it as it is, is being as-it-is; spending the night in a squatting posture is being a squatter, these are two. Fifth, as it is said in the sutra: 'Constantly having various views, the views of householders are difficult to subdue; relying on others for livelihood, the life of renunciates is difficult to maintain.' Therefore, for renunciates, it is easy to generate five wrong livelihoods, therefore, in order to abandon the five wrong livelihoods, it is declared: 'To obtain gain and respect, first speak gentle words.' This is flattery; 'To obtain benefit, praise the possessions of others.' This is inducement; 'To obtain benefit, openly disparage others.' This is cunning; 'Because one wants to obtain more with what one has obtained, one praises what one has obtained earlier.' This is seeking gain with gain; 'To obtain gain and respect, pretend to keep vows.' This is hypocrisy, as well as making a living through farming, trading, and selling the Dharma. Because these are wrong livelihoods, they should be abandoned.
