Oh. Fourth, elaborating on the distinctions, there are two parts: the individual methods of cultivating the five paths, and how realization arises in the continuum of the practitioner. The first part has five points: the path of accumulation, the path of preparation, the path of seeing, the path of cultivation, and the path of no more learning. First, the path of accumulation. The ordinary path of accumulation is the Pratimoksha vows, guarding the doors of the senses, knowing the measure of food, not sleeping during the upper and lower parts of the night but engaging in yoga, abiding in mindfulness, and so on. The special path of accumulation has three aspects: the four mindfulnesses in a small way, the four correct abandonments in a medium way, and the four legs of miraculous power in a great way. The first has five points: the object of focus, the aspect, the essence, the necessity, and where to meditate. The first is, meditating by focusing on the body, feelings, mind, and phenomena. Why are these established as objects of focus? Because those with inverted minds cling to the body as the object of my dwelling, to feelings as the basis of my enjoyment, to the mind as my object, and to phenomena as the basis of my defilement and purification, in order to turn away from these inverted thoughts. Among these, the body is of three types: the inner body, the outer body, and both bodies. The first is the inner form sense bases such as the eye. The second is the outer form sense bases such as forms. The third is the support of one's own senses and the form sense bases that are the support of others' senses, because they become both inner and outer by way of cause and sense base. The three, feeling and so on, also have three each in the same way. One should understand them appropriately from the perspective of the support and the object of focus. Phenomena are mental factors other than feelings, non-associated compositional factors, the form of the Dharmadhatu sense base, and conditioned and unconditioned phenomena. The second is, the own-characteristic, such as the nature of the body and so on, the elements and what arises from the elements; the general characteristics, such as impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Or, the body is impure, feelings are suffering, the mind is impermanent, and phenomena are selfless. The third is, discriminating with wisdom that distinguishes the individual own-characteristics and general characteristics of the body and so on, and with mindfulness that does not forget its object and aspect.

The reason is that, in this way, wisdom observes the self-common characteristics, and mindfulness repeatedly focuses the object on it, therefore it is called mindfulness abidance. The fourth reason is, in order to enter the four truths. For example, body mindfulness abidance is to enter the truth of suffering, because it is able to understand the detailed classification of the suffering of the body as the suffering of change and the suffering of suffering. Feeling mindfulness abidance is to enter the truth of origin, because it is able to recognize that the main cause of origin is craving, which is the cause of the three feelings such as pleasure, and wants to abandon it. Mind mindfulness abidance is to enter the truth of cessation, because by observing the consciousness that is separated from the self as momentary destruction, there is no doubt and fear of self and annihilation in nirvana, therefore it wants to realize the truth of cessation. Dharma mindfulness abidance is to enter the truth of the path, because by observing that afflictive dharmas such as attachment are to be abandoned, and pure dharmas such as faith are to be practiced, therefore it wants to practice the path. The same meaning is said in the Madhyantavibhāga: For the sake of bad suffering, for the cause of craving, for the sake of the basis, for the sake of not being ignorant, for the sake of entering the four truths, practice mindfulness abidance. Thus it is said. The fifth reason is, in the accumulation path, after the completion of hearing and thinking, by practicing the unpleasantness and the mindfulness of breathing in and out, the mind is made workable by the path of calm abiding, and it is practiced in order to generate the path of special insight. The second part also has five aspects: object, practice method, essence, result of practice, and boundary. The first is, the side of pervasive afflictions that should be abandoned, the side of purification that should be adopted, those that have arisen and those that have not arisen (dharmas). The second is, in order to abandon the evil non-virtuous dharmas that have arisen, not to generate the evil non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, to increase the virtuous dharmas that have arisen, to generate the virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, to generate desire, to initiate diligence, to hold the mind, to abide the mind. The third is, the four right abandonments are, abandoning what should be abandoned, increasing the action of the antidote
