By the meaning of being able to dominate, the two roots of male and female are established, because by the power of these two roots, one can take birth in the womb. By the meaning of being able to dominate, the life root is established, which enables the sentient being's own entity to be born and continue, and to give up life after it has continued. Because of the presence or absence of that life root, the names of life and death are established. Thus, these are established according to the division of the self of the sentient being who eats, and by the meaning of being able to dominate, the five sense roots are established in the object of what is eaten. Why are the last eight able to act as a division of purification? It is by the division of the means of being able to dominate the basis of purification, higher rebirth, that the five roots of faith and so on are established, and by the meaning of being able to dominate the definitive goodness of the nature of purification, the unknown to be known and so on are established. Moreover, there are two purifications, namely the worldly path and the path beyond the world. The five, faith and so on, are able to dominate the accomplishment of the worldly path, and the three, the unknown to be known and so on, are able to dominate the accomplishment of the path beyond the world. Second, the extensive explanation has three parts: first, showing the number of names; second, showing the individual functions; and third, examining the location. The first is the six roots from the eye to the mind, the male and female roots, the life root, and the five sense roots, namely the body's feeling of pleasure and pain, the mind's feeling of joy and sorrow, and the body and mind's feeling of equanimity, combining these two into one. Thus, these are the fourteen pervasively defiled roots. The faith root, which is to generate faith in the object to be believed, the diligence root, which is to rejoice in virtuous dharmas, the mindfulness root, which is not to forget the object of focus, the samadhi root, which is the one-pointedness of mind, and the wisdom root, which is to discriminate dharmas well, are the five virtuous roots. At the time of the path of seeing, the four feelings excluding sorrow, and the five roots of faith and so on, these nine are the unknown to be known root. At the time of the path of meditation, these nine roots are called the known root. At the time of the path of no more learning, these nine roots are called the completely known root. Thus, these are the three uncontaminated roots. The second is

Therefore, since these twenty-two exercise dominion, they are roots. What exercises dominion over what? The five colored roots, such as the eye, exercise dominion over their respective objects, from form to touch. Mind exercises dominion over all objects. The six, eye, etc., are roots. The two, male and female roots, exercise dominion over distinguishing the differences among sentient beings, such as males and females, so they are roots. The life root exercises dominion over the continuation of similar types, so it is a root. This life root is called lifespan. It is the non-associated formation that is the basis of warmth in the lower realms and the basis of consciousness in the formless realms. The five feeling roots exercise dominion over afflictions such as attachment, namely, attachment to pleasure and joy, hatred towards suffering and sorrow, and equanimity increases due to ignorance. The five roots of faith, etc., exercise dominion over worldly purification. Because it causes all to be known, it exercises dominion over the path of seeing, because it causes the truths that have not been directly realized to be realized. Because it causes all to be known, it exercises dominion over the path of meditation, because it causes the truths that have already been seen to be familiarized. Because it possesses all knowledge, it exercises dominion over the path of no more learning, because in the case of remainder, it exercises dominion over abiding in bliss in the present life, and in the case of no remainder, it exercises dominion over entering cessation. Thirdly, as a basis, beings in the desire realm have all the roots of existence, except for the three uncontaminated roots included in earth, they have all the roots. Except for the male and female roots and suffering and sorrow, the remaining ones are present in the lower two dhyanas. Because of being free from attachment to sexual desire, there are no male and female roots. Because there is no non-virtue, there is no ripening of suffering and sorrow. Because there is no action that harms body and mind, they also have no similar cause. Except for joy, the remaining seventeen roots are present in the third dhyana. Because of being free from attachment to joy, there is no joy. Except for pleasure, the fourth dhyana possesses the remaining sixteen roots. Because it is liberated from the eight faults of dhyana, there is no pleasure. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: Because it is liberated from the eight faults, the fourth (dhyana) is immovable.

Thus it is said. The eight faults are: investigation and analysis, purified breath, and the four, such as happiness. Thus it is said. The five, such as faith, are the three unpolluted ones; the eight virtues, equanimity, life, and mind, exist in all formless realms in a manner possessing eleven qualities. But in the peak of existence, it does not exist in a manner encompassed by the third unpolluted one, because it does not rely on the unpolluted. Thus it is also said. In the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: In the desire realm and the peak of existence, the limbs of the path to enlightenment are abandoned. Thus it is said. Explanation of the fifth chapter from the Compendium of Scriptures is completed. Chapter Five.
