There are six from the ground up to seeing. Attachment, aversion, and ignorance are the three in order due to wrongly engaging with the three: edible, doable, pleasure, suffering, and equanimity. Pride is wrongly engaging with sentient beings who eat. View is established as wrongly engaging with what is definitely not wrong. And doubt. Based on definite and indefinite wrong engagement. Therefore, there are six afflictions. The subtle expansion of these afflictions, namely, the predispositions not abandoned by antidotes, is the causal condition. The proximity of objects such as suffering and non-suffering is the objective condition. And considering impure and pleasurable things as improper attention is the dominant condition. These are the complete causes for the arising of afflictions. From these six afflictions, dividing view into five makes ten afflictions. If view is divided, then pride could also be divided into seven. Views are divided into five because their faults are great, in order to strive to abandon them. In which realm do these afflictions exist, and how many? Anger exists only in the desire realm and not in the upper realms, because there are no nine objects of universal torment. The nine objects of universal torment are: 'This one has harmed me, is harming me, and will harm me. This one has benefited my enemy, is benefiting my enemy, and will benefit my enemy. This one has harmed my friend, is harming my friend, and will harm my friend.' Second, the separate explanation is in three parts, the first of which is the explanation of what is abandoned by seeing. In the desire realm, the afflictions to be abandoned merely by seeing the four truths are forty, that is, ten afflictions such as attachment to be abandoned by seeing suffering, and similarly, up to ten to be abandoned by seeing the path. In the two upper realms, anger is abandoned for each of the four truths, so there are nine nines, that is, four nines. In total, there are two sets of thirty-six. In total, there are one hundred and twelve afflictions to be abandoned by seeing in the three realms. Among them, the view of the aggregates as real and the view of extremes are the conceptually constructed part, and the latter three views, doubt, and attachment, aversion, pride, and ignorance that wrongly engage with these views are all abandoned by seeing. Second, the explanation of what is abandoned by meditation. Wrongly engaging with objects

There are four afflictions such as desire, along with the co-emergent view of the perishable aggregate and the extreme view. In the desire realm, there are six afflictions to be abandoned by meditation. In the two upper realms, there are five each, excluding anger. In short, there are sixteen afflictions to be abandoned by meditation in the three realms. If these are divided by grounds and types, each of the nine grounds is further divided into nine by the distinctions of large, medium, and small, resulting in four hundred and fourteen. Third, the method of abandoning what is commonly identified: Among them, the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing arise from listening to false teachings from bad spiritual friends, and are therefore called 'imputed.' For example, like the attachment of non-Buddhists to a self and a chief. The afflictions to be abandoned by seeing are easy to abandon, so there is no distinction of grounds and types. The afflictions to be abandoned by meditation are habitually followed by all sentient beings from beginningless time, and are therefore called 'co-emergent.' For example, even animals have the thought of 'I' in relation to the aggregates. The afflictions to be abandoned by seeing are easy to abandon, so without relying on the distinction of grounds and types, they are abandoned simply by seeing the nature of truth, and are therefore called 'sudden abandonment.' For example, if one sees the suchness of the truth of suffering, one sees the suffering of the three realms, and thus abandons all that is to be abandoned at once. The afflictions to be abandoned by meditation have been followed since beginningless time, so they are difficult to abandon. Therefore, they will be gradually abandoned according to the distinction of grounds and types. Second, the characteristics are: As mentioned above, the characteristics of the origin are four: cause, arising, production, and condition. Among them, actions and afflictions are the agents that establish the imprints of existence, so they are called causes. They produce various kinds of suffering substances, so they are called arising. They produce different places, times, and forms of beings, so they are called production. They cause the body that has already been taken to be abandoned, and the body that has not been taken to be taken, so they are called conditions. Third, the truth of cessation. There are two aspects: the basis and the characteristics. First, the nature of the two is: the cessation of discrimination, where the habitual imprints of the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and meditation are abandoned by the wisdom arising from meditation in the mundane and supramundane realms.
