By experiencing the taste of meditative absorption arising in the continuum, one gradually passes through other abodes of form and formlessness, except for the Great Brahma and Pure Abodes, thereby reaching the peak of existence. These are those with karma to experience multiple rebirths, with dull faculties and great afflictions. Second, the extensive explanation: there are two types of going, to Akanistha and reaching the ultimate end of existence. The first has three types: The leaper is one who, here, cultivates the fourth dhyana alternately, experiencing the taste of the first, declines from the second and above, and is born in the Brahma host in the future. There, by the power of previous habituation, he cultivates the fourth alternately. After that, he is born in Akanistha and attains nirvana. The second, the half-leaper, is similar to the former. From the Brahma host, he is born in any of the lower three Pure Abodes. After that, he enters Akanistha and attains nirvana. The third, one who dies and transmigrates to all abodes, declines from alternate cultivation and, except for the Great Brahma, gradually passes through all other abodes of form and finally attains nirvana in Akanistha. The Great Brahma is one with the abode of views and the chief, so no noble ones are born there. One who goes to the ultimate end of existence does not go to the Pure Abodes because he has not cultivated alternate meditative absorption. Second, the formless near-goer is a non-returner who, because he is free from attachment to form, is born in the formless realm for the sake of the support of desire and attains nirvana. If we differentiate this, since there is no intermediate existence in the formless realm, there are four types: dying in the intermediate state, being born and then dying, and so on. There is no distinction of three types of leaping in this case, because this is the practice of calm abiding, so leaping and so on cannot be done. Third, the one who is pacified in the present life is a non-returner because he manifests nirvana at the very moment when the noble path arises. Fourth, the one who manifests the body is a student who possesses a hundred liberations. The fourth pair, concerning the category of arhats, includes identifying the place of entry and the abiding, and by which path one obtains freedom from attachment to what. First, of the two, the place of entry and the result, the first is that the eight faults of the peak of existence are exhausted, and entering the vajra-like samadhi of the uninterrupted path that abandons the ninth is the entry of the arhat. Second, the place of result is the ninth of the peak of existence.

When the liberation of abandonment arises, and the knowledge of exhaustion and non-rebirth arises, because the training is complete, there is no need for further learning, and because one is worthy of offerings from the three realms, it is said that one has attained Arhatship. Secondly, it explains how one attains freedom from attachment in which realm: one attains freedom from attachment in the peak of existence (srid rtse) through the path that transcends the world, not through the path of the world, because there is no other realm above the peak of existence. In the eight realms below the peak of existence, freedom from attachment can be attained through both the worldly and the transcendental paths, because the proximity concentration of the first dhyana, both with outflows and without outflows, can cause one to be free from desire for the desire realm. The afflictions above the first dhyana are abandoned by the proximity concentration of the higher realms, thus freedom from attachment is attained through the worldly path, while the abandonment by the outflows-free path of the lower realms and one's own realm results in freedom from attachment through the transcendental path. Secondly, the method of rapid liberation in three lifetimes: if the Shravakas' path is rapid, they attain liberation in three existences. In the first lifetime, they generate the roots of virtue that are in accordance with liberation; in the second, they generate the roots of virtue that are in accordance with decisive understanding; and in the third, they perfect the noble path up to the path of seeing, as it is explained in the scriptures. Thirdly, the four states are related to the eight grounds: among the eight grounds of the Shravakas, the ground of seeing white is the path of accumulation, because it is the virtue that accords with liberation. The ground of lineage is the great forbearance and supreme dharma of the path of joining, because after attaining these, one will not regress to other vehicles; however, below the intermediate forbearance, one may regress to the Pratyekabuddha vehicle, and in the heat and peak stages, one may also regress to the Mahayana vehicle. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakosha): "The two who regress from the lineage of learners will become Buddhas, and so will the other three." The eighth is the stream-enterer, because it is the eighth of the four pairs counted from the Arhat. The ground of seeing is the fruit of the stream-enterer, because it is the fruit of complete and perfect realization of the suchness of truth. The ground of attenuation is the fruit of the once-returner, because it is the fruit of having mostly abandoned desire, so it is a distinguished fruit. The ground of freedom from desire is the fruit of the non-returner, because one has abandoned desire for the desire realm, so it is a distinguished fruit.
