It is because it is the main obstacle to entering the path of Nirvana. Like this, because of clinging to the aggregates with the view of destruction, and being very happy with samsara, this becomes the cause of not being liberated from suffering. By clinging to the best of discipline and asceticism, and being very attached to the wrong path, this also becomes the cause of definitely being born in the wrong way. Because of doubt, hesitating on the good path, this becomes the cause of not being able to make a correct decision. For example, not wanting to go, wanting to go but relying on the wrong path, and hesitating on the correct path, these are like obstacles to reaching the destination. It is also said: Not wanting to go and the road is wrong, Hesitating on the road, Is an obstacle to the progress of liberation, Therefore, these three are taught. Why is it called a stream-enterer? Because he is free from the obstacles of liberation and has entered the stream of Nirvana. Classification: Divided by faculties into faith-follower and vision-attainer. The first is: The former follower of faith, when abiding in the fruit, is called faith-follower because of the greater faith and greater understanding. The second is: The former follower of Dharma, when in the fruit, is called vision-attainer because of seeing with greater wisdom. Divided by application into mere fruit-abider and differentiated one. The first is: Abiding in the fruit, but not striving on the path for the sake of a differentiated fruit. The second is the opposite of that. These two divisions by faculties and application should be viewed in the same way for the two intermediate fruits as well. Faculties sharp and dull in those, Followers of faith and Dharma. It is explained like this when the stream-enterer enters the stream, but there is no explanation when abiding in the fruit. If the stream-enterer is divided by the difference of births, if one obtains as desired, there are two types: seven times of going and returning, and birth from family to family. The first is: In general, is there anything to be abandoned by cultivation in the three realms? If so, the desire realm, the four dhyanas, and the four formless absorptions, each of these nine grounds has afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation, divided into small, medium, and large, and each of these is further divided into small, medium, and large.

If it is divided into nine nines, for those, except for the peak of existence, they are abandoned by the path of the world. The peak of existence is abandoned only by the path beyond the world. If one attains from that as desired, then the seventh existence has three distinctions: the distinction of the fruit is abiding in just the fruit; the distinction of abandonment is not completely abandoning the cultivatable to be abandoned of the desire realm; the distinction of birth is taking seven births as a god or human in the desire realm, and in the seventh, manifesting the end of suffering. Second, the birth from lineage to lineage also has three distinctions: the distinction of abandonment is being liberated from three or four types of cultivatable to be abandoned of the desire realm, and the fifth is not abandoned; the distinction of the antidote is obtaining the antidote to those abandoned, the uncontaminated faculty. The distinction of birth is taking two or three similar births as a god or human in the desire realm, and then being liberated from suffering. Second pair, regarding the category of the once-returner, there are two: the entering and the abiding. The first is: that stream-enterer has abandoned the five types of cultivatable to be abandoned of the desire realm, and when striving to abandon the sixth, it is called the gradually progressing once-returner enterer. Having previously abandoned the sixth affliction of the desire realm with the path of seeing, and the ninth not abandoned, now abiding in any of the first fifteen moments of the path of seeing, is the rapidly progressing once-returner enterer. Second, the fruit-abiding has just and distinct types. The first is: that gradually progressing once-returner enterer, when abiding on the path of liberation having abandoned the sixth affliction, is the gradually progressing once-returner. That rapidly progressing once-returner enterer, when abiding on the sixteenth moment of the path of seeing, is called the rapidly progressing once-returner fruit-abiding. The distinct once-returner fruit-abiding, the one-life one-interrupter, has three distinctions: the distinction of abandonment is that seven or eight faults of the desire realm are exhausted, and the ninth is not abandoned. The distinction of the antidote is obtaining the antidote to those, the uncontaminated faculty. The distinction of birth is taking one birth in the desire realm, and then being liberated from suffering. Third pair, regarding the non-returner, there are two: the entering and the abiding. The first is: that gradually progressing once-returner fruit-abiding, having abandoned the eighth affliction of the desire realm, and when striving in the application to abandon the ninth, is the gradually progressing non-returner enterer. The path of seeing previously abandoned the ninth affliction of the desire realm.
