Then, arranging them in order, the two intermediate fruits are established as the Once-Returner and Non-Returner fruits, and after abandoning the objects of abandonment by meditation in the upper realms, the Arhat fruit is established. Thus, the four fruits are determined by the difference in what is to be abandoned. Third, these four fruits are in a meaningful order because the earlier ones are the causes of the later ones. Fourth, upon what ground is it attained? The first and second fruits rely on the initial unbearable ground, because the afflictions of the desire realm have not been abandoned. The third fruit, if attained sequentially, relies on the unbearable ground; if attained by one who is free from desire, it relies on any of the actualities of meditative absorption. It does not rely on the formless realm, because that cannot serve as an antidote to the afflictions of the desire realm, and the Non-Returner is also distinguished by having abandoned the afflictions of the desire realm. The fourth fruit relies on the six meditative absorption grounds and the first three formless realms. If it is to be attained in the lower two realms, it relies on the six meditative absorption grounds; if it is attained in the formless realm, it is attained by relying on any of the first three formless realms. By which of the paths of seeing or meditation is it attained? The first fruit is attained only by the path of seeing, because it is distinguished by having abandoned the objects to be abandoned by seeing. The two intermediate fruits, if attained sequentially, are attained by the path of meditation; in most cases, if attained by one who is free from desire and by one who is free from desire from the desire realm, it is attained by the path of seeing. The final fruit is attained only by the path of meditation, because it is distinguished by having abandoned the objects to be abandoned by meditation in the upper realms. By which of the mundane or supramundane paths is it attained? The first and last fruits are attained only by the supramundane path, because the mundane path cannot abandon the objects to be abandoned by seeing and the afflictions of the peak of existence. The two intermediate fruits, those attained by the path of seeing are attained by the supramundane path, and those attained by the path of meditation, if that person is a practitioner of calm abiding, are attained by the mundane path; if he is a practitioner of insight, he is attained by the supramundane path. It is impossible to fall from the fruit attained by the supramundane path. The supramundane path eradicates the seeds of what is to be abandoned.

Therefore. Those obtained through worldly paths are subject to decline. Therefore, there is no decline from the first and last fruits, but there is a possibility of decline from the intermediate ones. The fifth is stated in the Abhidharmakośa: "In the desire realm, three are attained, the last, there is no seeing path above the three realms. The Anutpāda Sūtra states that it is initiated here, and it is completed here." Thus, the first three are attained only in the body of the desire realm. The Stream-enterer and Once-returner are because they have not separated from desire in the desire realm. The Non-returner, the gradual one, is obtained by relying on the initial application. The Transcender is obtained by relying on the seeing path, because there is no seeing path in the body of the upper realms. The reason for this is also because there is no weariness in the body of the upper realms. Because of being free from weariness, there is no initiation of the noble path for the sake of definite liberation from the three realms. The scripture also states that the five, such as attaining Parinirvana in the Bardo, are initiated here and completed here. Thus it is said. The fourth is obtained in the bodies of all three realms. Secondly, the classification of the individuals who abide in that has four: Stream-enterer aspirant, Stream-enterer fruition, Once-returner, Non-returner, Arhat aspirant, etc. The first has two: entering and abiding. The first, among the sixteen moments of knowledge and forbearance, the first fifteen moments, because of newly seeing the truth that was not seen before, is called the seeing path. One who abides in that, who has not completely abandoned the abandonment of cultivation in the desire realm, or who has abandoned the fifth level or below, is entering the fruit of Stream-entry, because they are striving on the path to obtain the first fruit. If divided, there are two: the dull-faculty follower of faith and the sharp-faculty follower of Dharma. The second, the abider in the fruit, is the same as the enterer, at the sixteenth moment, at the time of subsequent knowledge of the path, is the abider in the fruit of Stream-entry, because they have abandoned the three bonds and abide in the fruit of the excellent monastic conduct. The three bonds are the view of self, the adherence to ethics and asceticism, and doubt. Why is it that having abandoned these, one is established as a Stream-enterer? These three are the main objects to be abandoned by a Stream-enterer.
