3. The establishment of the two sets of four types of individuals who have attained the fruit of stream-entry. The way in which those who are quick attain liberation in three lifetimes. The union of the realizations of hearers and solitary realizers with the eight grounds. First, there are two aspects: the fruit in which one abides, and the establishment of the individual who abides in it. First, there are five aspects: the nature of the fruit, the certainty of its number and order, the cause for obtaining it, and in which realm one obtains what. The first is the fruit of the nature of a renunciate, for it is the supreme fruit. It is also the nature of both abandonment and realization. Each of these has eighty-nine, eighty-nine: the four categories of what is abandoned by seeing in the desire realm, and the four categories of what is abandoned by seeing in the two upper realms, the eight separations from abandoning the eight. Their liberations, and each of the nine grounds also has eighty-one separation fruits from abandoning the nine great, medium, and small categories of what is abandoned by meditation, and their liberations. The nature of a renunciate is the unobstructed path included in the uncontaminated, for it is called the nature of a renunciate because it abandons afflictions and becomes a true renunciate. Thus, it is also said in the sutra: "The law of sin and non-virtue is called..." and so on, "...because it has pacified the various forms of aging and death," therefore it is called a renunciate. Abandonments are the fruits of their separation, and liberations are the fruits of similar causes. These are called the fruits of the nature of a renunciate. Thus, it is also said in the Treasury: "The nature of a renunciate is the stainless path, the fruit is conditioned and unconditioned, these are eighty-nine, together with the paths of liberation and cessation." These are the four fruits of the nature of a renunciate, such as stream-entry, which are mentioned in the sutra due to the differences in their states. Second, if there are eighty-nine fruits of the nature of a renunciate, why are there only four fruits? The Treasury says: "The establishment of the four fruits is because of the existence of five causes. On the fruit, the path is first abandoned, and others are obtained, and cessation is attained, and the eight knowledges are fully obtained, and the sixteen aspects are obtained." Wherever these five causes exist, that is established as the fruit. Thus, the path of stream-entry is first abandoned, and so on.

Obtaining the path of fruition, and finding the same attainment of all abandonments, simultaneously obtaining the eight dharmas and subsequent knowledge, and obtaining the sixteen aspects such as impermanence. Thus it is said. Or it should be explained in this way: Thus, there are three things to be abandoned: the three bonds that hinder entering liberation, the five lower fetters that hinder transcending the lower realms and lower realms, and the five higher fetters that hinder transcending the higher realms. These, in order, are the coarse, subtle, and extremely subtle things to be abandoned by those who desire liberation, and abandoning them are also the small, medium, and great fruits to be sought in reality. Among them, the first abandonment is established as the fruit of stream-entry. The sutra says: This person, having abandoned the three bonds, is a stream-enterer. Making the five lower fetters weak, and completely abandoning them, are established as the fruits of once-returner and non-returner, respectively. The sutra says: What is the fruit of once-returner? It is the one who has abandoned the three bonds, and whose greed, hatred, and delusion have become weak. What is the fruit of non-returner? It is the one who has abandoned the five fetters corresponding to the lower division. Thus it is said. Why are two intermediate fruits established when abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm? Because the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm are the coarsest, and because they are abandoned gradually. When the afflictions of the desire realm are mostly exhausted, it is established as the fruit of once-returner, and when they are completely exhausted, it is established as the fruit of non-returner, this is to show the faults of the desire realm, and to show how to quickly transcend it. The third abandonment is established as the fruit of an arhat. The sutra says: Abandoning the five fetters corresponding to the higher division is the fruit of an arhat. In short, the things to be abandoned are definitely two types: those to be abandoned by seeing and those to be abandoned by cultivation. If we consider it from the perspective of abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing, then it is established as the fruit of stream-entry. What is to be abandoned by cultivation is also divided into two types: those included in the desire realm and those included in the higher realms. What is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm is divided into two types: coarse and subtle, from the perspective of abandoning these
