Such individuals, as mentioned above, can attain [certain states] merely through their own actions. One attains them after entering into meditative absorption. Those who are not of that kind, beings also live by this action. It is said that one attains them merely by making a commitment. The way of relinquishing them is: relinquishing the vows and non-vows that have been obtained, as well as death and the arising of dual genders. It is said thus. A person with dual genders is like a field that is saline and cracked, where neither grains nor seedlings grow; it is not a field for either vows or non-vows. Other than vows and non-vows, the virtue or non-virtue that arises in the continuum of both those with and without vows is called intermediate virtue and non-virtue. The way to obtain them is: the remaining field that is not conscious, and one obtains them through taking and respectful actions. For example, offering a monastery to the Sangha, merely the field is accomplished; and like not eating without prostrating to the Buddha, merely making a commitment; and like prostrating to a stupa, one obtains them merely by doing that action. The way of relinquishing them is: intermediate actions taken by force, as well as the meaning, life, and root being severed. Thus, those aroused by faith or intense afflictions, merely the force of that arousal is exhausted; and those truly taken, it is relinquishing the commitment; and the action as vowed is not accomplished; and like constantly circumambulating a stupa, like the stupa collapsing, the meaning is severed, as well as the transference of life, and one relinquishes them by the root of virtue being severed. Second, the unconditioned is so called because it is not made by the aggregation of causes and conditions. It has three aspects: space and two cessations, namely, cessations through discrimination and non-discrimination. Among them, the characteristic of space is: it does not obstruct other form-possessing things and opens up space for all actions. The cessation obtained by individually examining the aspects of truth with wisdom is the cessation through discrimination. What is that cessation? It is the separation obtained by wisdom abandoning afflictions. Thus, as the Vaibhashikas say, as many existing phenomena as there are, there are as many separate phenomena; however, the phenomena are separate and not one, otherwise, when manifesting the separation of abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing suffering, one should also manifest the separation of abandoning the remaining what is to be abandoned by seeing, therefore, all the moments after the path of seeing

It is said that the cessation that permanently obstructs the arising of conditioned phenomena in the future, which is different from cessation through individual examination, is called non-cessation through individual examination. This is because it is not attained through individual examination by wisdom, but is attained merely due to the lack of causes. The Vaibhashikas assert that these three are permanent substances, while the Sutrantikas and above assert that there is no non-affirming negation. Third, the explanation of ayatanas: From the aspect of being the gateway for the arising of the six consciousnesses' objects of experience, they are established as ayatanas. Therefore, the six faculties such as the eye are the gateways for the arising of the six consciousnesses' objects of experience, and are established as the six internal ayatanas because they open the gateway for arising. The six objects such as forms are the gateways for the arising of those objects of experience from the aspect of being the object of focus, and are established as the six external ayatanas. These are the twelve ayatanas. Second, the common determination includes: the method of summarizing, the meaning of the terms, the analysis of differences, and the necessity of showing the three dharmas. First, all the dharmas included in the previously explained skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, if summarized briefly, are all encompassed by the three: the skandha of form, the ayatana of mind, and the dhatu of dharma. Thus, the skandha of form encompasses the ten form dhatus and the ten ayatanas. The ayatana of mind encompasses the skandha of consciousness and the seven consciousness dhatus, and the dharma dhatu encompasses the three skandhas of feeling, etc., a portion of the dharma ayatana that is non-cognitive, and the unconditioned. Second, the meaning of gathering various similar things into one place by wisdom, and the gateway for the arising of mind and mental factors, and the meaning of type or source, are respectively the meanings of the terms skandha, ayatana, and dhatu. Third, it is divided into: the analysis of the three dharmas in general, and the analysis of the differences between mind and mental factors. The first is further divided into six aspects. First, analyzing which dhatu belongs to which: Where do these eighteen dhatus exist? And how many? All eighteen dhatus exist in the desire realm. Fourteen exist in the form realm, because there is no smell, taste, or the consciousnesses of nose and tongue.
