If so, why are terms like "eye consciousness" named from the perspective of the sense faculties, and not from the perspective of objects like form, etc.? Because the sense faculties are the uncommon cause of consciousness, as each individual's sense faculty generates its own consciousness and not that of others. Objects are not the uncommon cause of consciousness in the same way, as a single object can generate a common consciousness for multiple individuals. Naming from the perspective of the uncommon cause is also for the sake of easy understanding. For example, a sprout that grows dependent on seeds, soil, and water is called a "barley sprout," named after the uncommon cause of the seed, so that the desired specific thing is clearly understood, and not called a "soil sprout" or "water sprout." Therefore, entering consciousnesses are generated by uncommon causes, such as the eye and other sense faculties, so they are called sense consciousnesses, and not object consciousnesses, because the specific meaning of what is desired would not be clearly understood. Second, explaining the realms, there are two parts. First, a brief explanation: Because of apprehending the proximate, they are established as realms. Because the six consciousnesses apprehend the proximate from the perspective of the basis, there are the six sense faculty realms of the eye, etc.; because they apprehend from the perspective of the object, there are the six object realms of form, etc.; and because they apprehend by their own characteristics, they are determined as the six aggregates of consciousness. Therefore, the realms are considered to be eighteen. Among these, the eye realm is twofold: manifestation and seed. The first is the past and present eye faculty, which has already apprehended and is apprehending the proximate of eye consciousness. The second is the seed of eye consciousness existing in the alaya consciousness, and the aspect of the alaya consciousness's fruition that currently appears as the eye faculty; these are the cause of the eye, so they are called the eye realm. Similarly, the remaining four sense faculties, the six consciousness realms, and the five objects such as form should also be understood as their respective realms from the perspective of manifestation and seed. Second, a detailed explanation, in two parts. First, explaining the mind realm: The six aggregates of consciousness are the consciousness realm.

Wasn't it said by someone? If asked, what is the mind realm other than those? There is no mind realm other than those. However, the moment the six consciousnesses cease, the consciousness of that moment, as the basis of the subsequent consciousness, is therefore the mind realm. In that case, the six consciousness aggregates, because they are included in the mind realm, wouldn't they become the eighteen realms? For the five consciousnesses, the sense organs such as the eye are the basis. Because consciousness has no other basis, therefore, in order to strongly prove the basis of the sixth consciousness, the mind realm is set apart from the six consciousness aggregates, so it is said to be the eighteen realms. Second, regarding the Dharma realm, it is divided into two types: general explanation and separate explanation of what is difficult to understand. The first is that the three aggregates of feeling, etc., mentioned above, as well as non-form and unconditioned phenomena, because they are the door of the object of consciousness, the door of arising, and because they hold the object of consciousness through the door of the object, they are called the Dharma realm. As it is said in the Abhidharmakośa, "Those three non-forms and unconditioned, are called the Dharma place and the Dharma realm." The second is divided into two explanations: non-form and unconditioned phenomena. The first, the definition, is stated in the Abhidharmakośa as "distraction." In this regard, whether it is self-generated mental distraction, or non-distraction, or mindlessness, or all states of existence, it arises, and its essence is either virtuous or non-virtuous, continuously connected, born from the four great elements as the cause, invisible and unimpeded. Although it is the essence of karma and action, because the self-generated mind cannot recognize it, it is therefore called non-form. Second, the classification is "non-form, there are three types," as stated in the Abhidharmakośa, the meaning has been explained before. People who possess non-restraint, such as kings, ministers, butchers, hunters, fishermen, etc., because they are always inseparable from the thought of harming others. The way to obtain non-restraint is to obtain it through performing non-restrained actions and making promises.
