It is not to be done, but as the cause and condition of all the defiled dharmas. Therefore, although these two are not distinct in substance, they are only different in characteristics. The first of these is the basis for children to cling to as self, so it is also the ālaya. Because it holds the appearance of objects, it is also consciousness. And because it is the nature of the complete ripening of karmic imprints, it is also the vipāka. Therefore, it is also called ālaya, also called ālaya-vijñāna, and also called vipāka-vijñāna. The latter is: Here, all defiled dharmas are the nature of the fruit, or this is also the ālaya that combines them as the nature of the cause, but because it is not knowledge, it is not ālaya-vijñāna and vipāka-vijñāna. Among the extremely numerous karmic imprints existing in the ālaya, the way in which the vipāka fruit arises is: the extremely heavy karmic imprints, their vipāka will arise first. If the weight is equal, then what appears at the time of death will ripen first. If the clarity at the time of death is equal, then what is more accustomed will ripen first. If these are also equal, then the fruit of the karma that was first practiced will arise first. Thus it is said. As the great scholar Vasubandhu said: Karma in saṃsāra, whichever is heavier, whichever is closer, whichever is accustomed, whichever was done first, from among these, the earlier one ripens earlier. Thus it is said. The ālaya of the nature of vipāka is the cause of transcending suffering, it itself is pure, therefore the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas obtain the completely liberated body, and become the body of the Buddha. However, it is not explicitly stated that it is the cause of nirvāṇa. Also: The realm of beginningless time, is the abode of all dharmas, because it exists, all beings and nirvāṇa can be attained. Thus it is said, this is only considering the ālaya as the basis of the uncontaminated seed. The third is the scripture of knowledge, in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra it says: The taker, that is, the taking consciousness has two aspects, the aspect of vipāka and the aspect of seed. The first is profound, even the wise men of the world cannot fathom its depths.

because of its ability. Second, it is subtle, because it is not a substance, and it cannot be said to be that or other, therefore it is difficult to observe. For example, when the river flows naturally, it flows together with the waves caused by the wind. The Alaya consciousness, like a river, arises without interruption even for a moment, and it itself runs together with the manifest consciousness like water waves, so it is said to flow like a river. This Alaya consciousness, to children, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas, I have not explained in terms of its own characteristics, because it is not necessary to explain to them, and explaining it would be a fault. Why is it not necessary to explain? Because it is summarized by subtle knowable objects, and they do not value the knowledge of vast knowable objects. Explaining it would also be a fault, because grasping the body and continuous operation are consistent with the self, so they think there is a self, and thus are far from obtaining the fruits they desire. Therefore, it is not right to cling to the self. And so on. Second, regarding the afflicted mind, there are two aspects: its nature and the time of its operation and cessation. First, the afflicted mind is that which always manifests with arrogance, except for the three situations of focusing on the Alaya, which will be explained below. Why does it focus on the Alaya consciousness? Because by the power of the Alaya of the nature of Vipaka, this arises as having the image of self, therefore, it is called focusing on it. It does not focus on the nature of the Alaya itself, because when the ground has not been attained, the nature of the Alaya cannot be truly understood. This has nine companions, namely the five omnipresent mental factors, and satkayadrishti (Tibetan: བདག་ཏུ་ལྟ་བ་,梵文天城体:सत्कायदृष्टि,IAST: satkāyadṛṣṭi,Literal meaning: view of the existing body), atmasneha (Tibetan: བདག་ལ་ཆགས་པ་,梵文天城体:आत्मस्नेह,IAST: ātmasneha,Literal meaning: self-love), atmamana (Tibetan: བདག་ཏུ་ང་རྒྱལ་བ་,梵文天城体:आत्ममान,IAST: ātmamāna,Literal meaning: self-pride), and atmamoha (Tibetan: བདག་ཏུ་རྨོངས་པ་,梵文天城体:आत्ममोह,IAST: ātmamoha,Literal meaning: self-ignorance). The feeling is equanimity, and the nature is obscured and indeterminate. Because it is disturbed by the four afflicted companions, and it operates together with virtue and non-virtue. This is clinging to the self.
