The various schools believe that consciousness, like themselves, can generate effects and secretly grasp. They want to hold onto the consciousness that arises in accordance with things, believing that the grasper and the grasped are asynchronous in terms of cause and effect. There are two types of Mind-Only schools. Among them, the Aspectarian Mind-Only school believes that the appearances of the five sense consciousnesses, such as forms and sounds, are the very nature of the mind that truly appears. Due to the power of habit, they appear in name as external to the mind. This is what they believe. The Truth Aspectarian school, on the other hand, believes that the mind is like a crystal ball, free from impurities, and constantly abides in the nature of non-dual experience, unpolluted by the defilements of the grasper and the grasped. The appearance of things such as forms and sounds is false, appearing as if they exist due to the power of habit, like seeing hairs. In reality, neither consciousness nor external objects are established. The Madhyamaka school believes that both the grasper and the grasped are like illusions and dreams, without inherent existence. Among them, the teacher Lekden believes that in name, it is the same as the Sautrantika school. Yeshe Nyingpo and Shantarakshita believe that it is the same as the Aspectarian Mind-Only school. The glorious Chandrakirti acknowledges the way the grasper and the grasped are commonly known in the world, accepting it in name. Second, analyzing the differences between mind and mental factors is divided into three points. First, the distinction between substance and characteristics: Are the mental factors mentioned earlier real or nominal? They are called mental factors. Among them, which twenty are real? From "the five omnipresent ones" to "exertion cultivated," these do not depend on others and can be independent, so they are real. The other twenty-nine mental factors are nominal, because without understanding the nature of the basis of imputation, one cannot understand their definitions, so they cannot be independent. In general, the principles of real and nominal existence include whether rational analysis can be established or not, whether there is function or not, and whether there is independence or not. Here, it is the former. Nominal existence is also divided into three types: imputation on the basis of occasion, imputation on the basis of aggregation, and imputation on the basis of parts. Here, it is the latter. Second, the way of imputing on which kind of person is: stinginess and the like are part of attachment.

It is an establishment. It is not good to say "temporary." To establish as temporary is "non-associated formations." The five, such as resentment, are established in the aspect of anger, because the nature of anger is commonly followed. This reason should also be known in others. The six, such as concealment, are said to be the aspect of ignorance, which is a rough statement. In detail, regret and sleep, virtuous and neutral, etc., are mind and belong to the aspect of wisdom. The six, such as shamelessness, are said to be established on the general collection of the three poisons, although the other four are similar, deceit does not belong to the aspect of anger, but belongs to the aspect of desire and ignorance. Equanimity, mindfulness, non-attachment, non-anger, and non-ignorance are the nature of being without the three poisons. Even though mindfulness is like that, equanimity is a mental factor, which is said to be real in the scriptures. Non-harm is the aspect of non-anger, and non-ignorance is the aspect of wisdom. Wrong view and non-awareness are inverted wisdom. The two, investigation and analysis, are mind when not mistaken and not realized, and are the aspect of wisdom when realized. What is said is that the memory of not forgetting the object of affliction is afflicted. Third, examining where and how many there are, where and how many are these mental factors? In the desire realm, they exist in a way that includes everything. From anger to regret and sleep, there are none above the first dhyana, because there is no object of universal torment, so there is no anger, and therefore there are no anger, etc., that belong to it. Because there is no attachment to possessions, there is no stinginess, and because there is no non-virtue, there is no shame and no shamelessness. Because it contradicts samadhi, there is no regret and sleep. In the special essence of the first dhyana, because investigation is separated from desire, there is no investigation. In the first dhyana, there is attachment to the retinue, so there is deceit. For example, when the horse tamer asked Brahma where the four great elements cease, Brahma did not know and said, "I am Brahma," and thus entered into deceiving the great Brahma. Deceit and the two, investigation and analysis, are not in the second dhyana, because investigation and analysis are separated from desire, and because there is no attachment to the retinue. Fourth, the necessity of teaching the three dharmas.

Sakya Paṇḍita asked: Why did the Bhagavan (the Blessed One) teach the Dharma to those to be tamed through the three doors of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases? Because worldly people have three kinds of clinging to self: clinging to a permanent and singular self, clinging to a self as cause, and clinging to a self as consumer. In order to reverse these, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases are explained in order. As it is also said in the Madhyāntavibhāga (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes): 'To one, cause, and consumer, these are regarded as self.' This is the commentary on the first chapter, which explains the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, from the Compendium of Scriptures.
