Except for the realms of form. Odor and taste are absent because they are included in sectional food, and those without attachment to sectional food are born there. Without a place, there is no need to enjoy it there, so there are no consciousnesses of nose and tongue either. Because of the need to adorn the support and to be close to speech, the faculties of nose and tongue are present. If there is no form, then the realms of mind, dharma, and mind consciousness are present, but the others are not, because there is no attachment to form. Second, examining contaminated and uncontaminated: Among these eighteen realms, which are contaminated and which are uncontaminated? The last three realms are both contaminated and uncontaminated. Like this, those included in the unconditioned and the truth of the path are not associated with any of the six gates of contamination, and they will not increase through any contaminated object or association. Therefore, they are uncontaminated, while the rest are contaminated. Apart from those three realms, the remaining first fifteen realms are contaminated, because they are associated with any of the six gates of contamination, and contamination will increase through the means of object and association. The six gates of contamination are: the nature of contamination, association with contamination, being bound by contamination, following contamination, conforming to contamination, and arising from the cause of contamination. The first is: afflictions and near afflictions. The second is: the co-emergent minds and mental factors that are associated with those. The third is: the virtuous actions of the three doors of ordinary people. The fourth is: the seeds of afflictions. The fifth is: that which gives rise to and conforms to afflictions. The sixth is: the contaminated aggregates of an Arhat. Third, examining form: What are the characteristics of the four great elements of earth, etc.? For the consciousness of the body, those that appear as hardness, moisture, warmth, lightness, and movement are, in order, the characteristics of the four great elements of form as cause, the realms of earth, water, fire, and wind. They are the source of all form as effect, or from beginningless samsara,
