Manifestation sees the various consciousnesses. Their distinctions arise from the mind. Thus it is said. Regarding the meaning, essence, and distinctions of mind and mental factors, although ancient scholars made many distinctions, they generally did not go beyond, and nowadays no one pays attention to them. Therefore, I have written about them in detail in the commentary on the Compendium of Abhidharma. Please refer to it there. If we classify consciousness, there are eight consciousnesses: the ālaya-vijñāna, the afflicted mind, and the six consciousnesses. Second, the detailed explanation is divided into three: the ālaya-vijñāna, the afflicted mind, and the six entering consciousnesses. The first part has three aspects: its characteristics and divisions, and the scriptures that prove it. The first part also has three aspects, the first being the actual text: Among the eight consciousnesses, the characteristic of the ālaya-vijñāna is: the vipāka-vijñāna is associated with all of all pervasive afflictive dharmas. Its names are: Because it is the basis of all of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, it is also called ālaya-vijñāna. Because it is the nature of the complete maturation of the predispositions of previously accumulated karma, it is also called vipāka-vijñāna. Because it is the continuum that causes the body that has not been obtained to be obtained, and the body that has already been obtained to abide, it is also called ādāna-vijñāna. Because it is the place of the three natures of knowable objects, it is also called the place of knowable objects. So, what are its objects and aspects like? In the realm of form, its objects are two: the internal aspect of taking and the external aspect of the vessel. The first is the predispositions of what is imputed as the apprehended and the apprehender, and the physical sense faculties with their locations, these two. Among them, the first is: Because it takes the form together with the sense faculties, it is called taking. The second is: Because it is what is to be taken, it is taking. The aspect of the vessel is: mountains, houses, and so on, which are external objects, are the appearances gathered by the senses. Why are these three the objects of the ālaya-vijñāna? Because, with the predispositions of what is imputed as the cause and condition, the vipāka-vijñāna arises, manifesting the sense faculties such as the eye belonging to one's own and others' continuums, and the appearances of external vessels such as mountains, houses, and so on. Therefore, the predispositions of clinging to what is imputed are

Because the Vipaka-vijnana (resultant consciousness) is the cause of generating the object that appears as an object and mind, it is established as an object. For example, the Sautrantikas believe that although objects such as form and sound do not actually appear in the consciousness of the senses, they can generate consciousness with the aspect of being apprehended, so they are established as objects. The material sense organs together with their support and the external world are the apprehended objects of the Vipaka-vijnana, so they are established as objects. In the formless realm, only the habit of conceptual construction is the object, because from the cause and condition of the habit of conceptual construction, and from the cause of the lord of unwavering karma accomplished by the samadhi of infinite space, etc., the Vipaka-vijnanas born in the four formless realms, the first two have objects of immeasurable apprehension, and the latter two have objects of subtle and extremely subtle apprehension. If you ask, how do these objects enter? The answer is that they enter in a very unclear, continuous, and uniform manner for as long as life lasts. If you ask, why are they so unclear? The answer is that just as the object of eye consciousness is form, the object of this consciousness cannot be completely determined as "this is it" by the power of experience. If you ask, why does it enter continuously in the same taste? The answer is that because in the first moment of rebirth in the place of birth, the object and aspect will enter in the same way for as long as life lasts. Therefore, it can also be called the object-aspect that is completely uninterrupted. Thus, in the Thirty Verses, it is said: "It is with the receiver, and with consciousness and non-consciousness." Secondly, its difference is that the feeling that is associated with the Alaya-vijnana is only neutral feeling, not pleasure or pain, because those objects and aspects are different, so they are not associated with this. It is obscured and non-specified, because it is not associated with afflictions, and because virtue and non-virtue manifest and enter into the same continuum together. Its retinue of contact, attention, feeling, perception, etc., are also the same.

The feeling there is neutral, and it is obscured and unspecified. Its companions are none other than the five omnipresent ones. That alaya consciousness continues without interruption even for a moment in the state of samsara, like the flow of a river. In that, the seed aspect of the alaya consciousness ceases after the Hearers and Solitary Realizers attain Arhatship, and the Mahayanists cease from the eighth bhumi onwards, because in those stages, all the seeds of affliction have been abandoned. The aspect of fruition ceases in the way that the aggregates of Hearers and Solitary Realizers are extinguished without remainder, and the Mahayanists cease in the way that it transforms into mirror-like wisdom as a result of diamond-like samadhi. Therefore, in the state of remaining aggregates and in the state of the three pure grounds, although there is fully ripened consciousness, it is not called alaya consciousness, because it does not serve as the basis for all defiled dharmas. Third, the way in which entering consciousness arises there is: the five sense consciousnesses, the root consciousness, from the alaya consciousness, due to the condition of awakening the habitual tendencies, one to five consciousnesses arise, either simultaneously or not in that way but gradually, as appropriate. For example, just as from water, due to the power of many or few conditions, many or few waves arise gradually and simultaneously as appropriate. Second, the distinction is: the alaya consciousness is said in the scriptures to be divided into two types: the fruition alaya consciousness and the habitual tendency alaya consciousness. Those two are like an image residing in a mirror. On the fruition alaya consciousness, the habitual tendency alaya consciousness is neither the same nor different. Among them, the alaya consciousness of the nature of fruition is: because it is the nature of wisdom, it possesses the object and aspect as mentioned above, performs the activities of taking a body and abiding, becomes the basis for imprinting the habitual tendencies of all defiled dharmas, and is the dominant condition for all present defiled dharmas, pervading the entire body from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head. The alaya consciousness of the nature of habitual tendencies is the habitual tendencies of all defiled dharmas, and it also abides in its essence only by its potential, and because it has not been established as a substance of consciousness, it has no object or aspect. From the aspect of fruition, it is that substance itself, and it cannot be said to be different.
