Regarding how to gather a retinue: One should abandon the thirty-two impure giving mentioned in the Sutra of the Increasing Elder, and gather by giving pure giving that is the opposite of that. Second, explaining the impurity of field, object, and intention in detail: Impure field, such as fire and water, etc. Impure object, such as poison and weapons, etc. Impure intention of motivation, such as being attached to youth, etc. These thirty-two impure givings are explained in detail in the Sutra of the Increasing Elder, so one should look there. Second, gathering a retinue with pleasant speech has three parts: examining the object to be taught, the difference in the way of teaching, and the conduct of the teacher. First, pleasant speech, etc. Second, for the inferior, etc., the others are easy to understand. Do not lead astray with sutra and mantra, meaning that sutra refers to believing that liberation and higher realms can be attained merely by reciting the four great Vedas, etc., and mantra refers to eliminating sins by reciting Vedic mantras, etc. Do not lead disciples into such wrong paths. Third, conduct should not be completely abandoned, meaning that teaching the Dharma with beautiful conduct of body and speech. Third, benefiting behavior is divided into two: brief explanation and detailed explanation. First, benefiting behavior is placing disciples on the three paths of individual liberation, Bodhisattva, and Secret Mantra. Second, there are three: the common individual liberation vows, the special Bodhisattva mind generation, and the profound Secret Mantra vows. First, there are five: the difference of the seven types of individual liberation vows, whether the full ordination is complete or not, the difference of novice monks, the ten behaviors of full ordination, the eighteen schools that branched out from the four major schools, and how these are the activities of the Buddha. First, there are four: laymen and laywomen, fasting, novice monks and novice nuns, and the vows of monks and nuns. First, there are seven types of individual liberation vows: laymen and laywomen, novice monks and novice nuns, monks and nuns, and fasting, making seven in total. In the Treasury, it is said that there are eight types of individual liberation, with the addition of the probationary nun, there are eight. Among them, the five precepts from abstaining from killing to abstaining from alcohol for as long as one lives are the vows of a layman, and if this vow exists in the continuum of a male, then he is a male layman.

The precepts of Upasaka and Upasika, which are held by male and female lay followers. The Upasaka precepts are also composed of three branches: abandoning things that harm others is the branch of truly taking; the branch of repairing what has been lost from what has been taken; and the branch of not losing what has been taken. Among these, abandoning harm to life, possessions, and wives is the first branch. Abandoning false speech is the second branch. Abandoning alcohol, concocted alcohol, and places of recklessness is the third branch. Secondly, abstaining from the eight things to be abandoned from killing to afternoon food for one day and one night is the Upavasa. The others are easy to understand. A large high seat is made of precious materials such as gold and silver. High means more than one cubit. The Upavasa precepts are also composed of five branches, as follows: abandoning harm to others is the branch of truly taking; abandoning harm to oneself and others is the branch of truly taking; the branch of repairing what has been lost from what has been taken; the branch of establishing mindfulness in order to prevent what has been taken from being lost; and the branch of not becoming confused in mindfulness. Among these, abandoning harm to the lives and possessions of others is the first branch. Abandoning unchaste conduct is the second branch. Abandoning that does not harm oneself by not relying on one's own wife, and does not harm others by not relying on the wife of another. Abandoning false speech is the third branch. Abandoning the other three places except for abandoning alcohol, concocted alcohol, mixed alcohol, and places of recklessness is the fourth branch. Why? Because at that time, one always sees oneself as solitary for a moment by relying on dance, song, the sound of music, incense, garlands of flowers, high seats, large seats, and untimely food. Therefore, the thought "I have performed the Uposatha with the Uposatha" always arises, and mindfulness abides closely. Abandoning alcohol and so on is the fifth branch, because one thinks, "I am abiding in mindfulness."
