The way to eliminate wrong views. In particular, the way of supreme emptiness. The fault of not meditating on wisdom. The benefit of generating wisdom. First, by examining the characteristics of what to accept and reject with the wisdom of hearing, one can suppress the head of coarse afflictions. With the wisdom of thinking, by repeatedly distinguishing the suchness of things, one can suppress the head of coarse afflictions. By familiarizing oneself with the meaning of thought with a single-pointed mind, when familiarity reaches its peak, the wisdom of meditation, in which suchness becomes manifest, can uproot afflictions. Second, if one asks: Can't afflictions also be subdued by meditating on love and aversion, etc.? The answer is: Love and aversion, etc., cannot completely cut off the imprints of attachment, etc., which arise from self-grasping, because the root of attachment, etc., ignorance of self, is not contradictory to love and aversion, etc. Whatever does not harm the cause does not harm the effect, just as sweet and oily substances do not harm phlegm disease. Third, because the view of realizing emptiness and the root of faults, self-grasping, are contradictory. The nature of self-grasping, that is, its result, all faults such as attachment, etc., is completely contradictory. Fourth, if one asks: Can afflictions be abandoned merely through the wisdom of hearing and thinking? The answer is: If one regards the wisdom of hearing and thinking as supreme and does not meditate, then suchness will not become manifest, so it is said that hearing and thinking will ultimately fall into doubt. This means that hearing and thinking cannot ascertain suchness as it is. Fifth, then, is meditation itself supreme? What is the use of the wisdom of hearing and thinking? The answer is: Without the wisdom of hearing and thinking that cuts off superimposition and denial of reality, even if samadhi is perfected, one will only attain samadhi and the mind-only of the formless realms, but one will not attain liberation. Therefore, the combination of wisdom that realizes reality and single-pointed samadhi is the ladder to ascend the five paths. The Dharmakaya of the perfect Buddha is also the result of perfecting the habituation of the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating that realizes the suchness of things without error, as stated in all the sutras and tantras. Therefore, hearing, thinking, and meditating

It is necessary to combine the three. As stated in the Compendium of Abhidharma: Without relying on listening and thinking, merely relying on meditative practice alone cannot abide in the Dharma; without relying on meditation, merely relying on listening and thinking cannot abide in the Dharma; if one relies on both and abides in both, it is called abiding in the Dharma. Thus it is said. Fourth, the stages of experiential realization are five: the path of accumulation, the path of preparation, the path of seeing, the path of meditation, and the path of no more learning. First, the path of accumulation, the thirty-two aspects of the four preparatory practices, the small ones perfect the four mindfulnesses with wisdom, and the great ones perfect the four miraculous feet with samadhi. Second, the path of preparation, obtaining a small clear appearance of the apprehended as being without inherent existence is the heat stage; obtaining a medium appearance is the peak stage; obtaining a large appearance is the forbearance stage; obtaining an appearance of the apprehender as being without inherent existence is the supreme mundane dharma. The path of preparation has four aspects conforming to definite emergence. Even though the dharmadhatu has not manifested, it is said that clear appearances gradually arise in the nature of reality that is the non-duality of the apprehended and the apprehender. Furthermore, in the stages of heat and peak, one cultivates the five faculties as antidotes to lack of faith, etc.; in the stages of forbearance and supreme mundane dharma, one cultivates the five powers, thereby gradually obtaining clear appearances of the nature of reality, and ultimately, in the path of seeing, the true nature of reality manifests. Third, the path of seeing has three aspects: the way of generating meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment illustrated by examples, cultivating the seven branches of enlightenment, the way of reaching perfection, and the way of obtaining one hundred and twelve qualities. First, just as a blind person cannot see forms, children have never seen the nature of reality that is empty of the two selves; and just as a newborn infant sees the orb of the sun slightly but does not see it completely, so too, the Hearers and Pratyekabuddhas of the Lesser Vehicle only see the nature of reality that is empty of the self of persons, but do not fully see the nature of reality that is empty of the two selves; in the meditative equipoise of the Mahayana path of seeing, one directly sees the nature of reality that is empty of the two selves and free from elaboration, and in the subsequent attainment, sixteen moments of wisdom and forbearance arise. Second, it is thought that the way the seven branches of enlightenment, such as perfect discrimination of dharmas, reach perfection in the path of seeing has already been explained. Third, the way of obtaining one hundred and twelve qualities is easy to understand. Above
