When giving meager offerings, its essence is generosity; abandoning the thoughts of Hearers and Solitary Realizers is discipline; aspiring to omniscience and being unafraid of poverty, etc., is patience; delighting in generosity is diligence; dedicating with a single-pointed mind, unmixed with other vehicles, to omniscience is meditation; not fixating on the object of giving, the giver, etc., is wisdom. This is how to practice generosity with the six perfections. Likewise, one should understand the others accordingly. Seventh, generosity is for abandoning the poverty of oneself and others; discipline is for obtaining the coolness that pacifies the heat of afflictions; patience is enduring the harm of anger; diligence is engaging with supreme qualities; meditation is holding the mind on the object; wisdom is for knowing ultimate truth. Second, there are five aspects to meditating on shamatha and vipashyana: the reason for needing to meditate on shamatha and vipashyana; abandoning obstacles; accomplishing conducive conditions; identifying the nature of shamatha and vipashyana; and advising to generate the three companions of wisdom. First, nirvana is attained only through the union of shamatha and vipashyana, and not otherwise. Without the wisdom that thoroughly knows the individual and general characteristics of phenomena, there can be no meditation. Because wisdom eliminates doubt about the object of knowledge and cuts through superimpositions, it allows one to comfortably abide in the object of focus. Without meditation, there is no wisdom that knows things as they truly are. As it is said, 'If the mind is placed in equipoise, one knows things as they truly are.' Any yogi who possesses both single-pointed meditation on the object and wisdom that knows things as they truly are can cross the ocean of existence like a footprint in water, quickly drying up or being able to cross it. Here, wisdom is understood as realizing the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, for otherwise, one cannot cut the root of existence. Wisdom without meditation is unstable and cannot uproot afflictions. Similarly, without wisdom, meditation only suppresses the manifestation of afflictions but cannot uproot their seeds. Therefore, nirvana is attained through the path of the union of shamatha and vipashyana.

Yes. For these, emphasis is placed on vipassanā (insight meditation) rather than śamatha (calm abiding). As it is said: Those who practice the Dharma, If they do not incline towards your teachings, Those beings blinded by ignorance, Even if they reach the peak of existence, Will still experience suffering and create karma. And it is said: Followers of your teachings, Even if they have not attained true samādhi, Can, like wearing down the eye-covering of Māra, Turn back all existences. Thus it is said. Therefore, those who desire liberation should first cultivate śamatha to the point where the mind is workable, and then, based on that, starting from mindfulness, diligently practice the yoga of meditating on the two aspects of selflessness with discriminating wisdom. Merely cultivating the abiding of the mind without discriminating wisdom will not even attain detachment from the world, let alone liberation. Second, vipassanā without śamatha is like a lamp moved by the wind, unable to eliminate afflictions. Therefore, it should be understood that vipassanā endowed with śamatha can destroy afflictions. Therefore, one should first seek śamatha of one-pointedness of mind, and this is accomplished only through non-attachment to the world and extreme joy, and not through other means. Therefore, those who wish to generate the yoga of śamatha and vipassanā should distance themselves from the busyness of the body and the distractions of the mind. Third, because one does not crave Dharma, excellent alms, and many possessions, one is content with little desire, and merely being satisfied with meager things will bring about the qualities of relying on solitude, and thus the samādhi of śamatha and vipassanā will arise. Fourth, if asked what the nature of these śamatha and vipassanā are? In the Ornament [for Clear Realization], it says: Relying on correct abiding, In order to place the mind on the mind, And in order to distinguish profound meanings, Are śamatha and vipassanā. Thus it is said. Abandoning all objects of elaboration, correctly abiding single-pointedly in the nature of the mind is śamatha. Vipassanā is the analysis of the meaning of the two truths with discriminating wisdom, that is, when examining with reasoning such as oneness and separateness, the wisdom that examines all internal and external phenomena as emptiness, free from elaboration. Fifth, divided into five points: the functions of the three wisdoms, the common practice.
