This itself is what we practice. This itself is what dispels fear and suffering. Therefore, I should always practice this. Thus it is said. The ultimate result is the attainment of Buddhahood, as it is said in the Manifestation of Enlightenment of the Ornament of Realization: The wisdom of knowing all aspects arises from the cause of the mind of enlightenment, has compassion as its root, and is perfected by skillful means. Thus it is said. Also, as it is said in the Commentary on the Mind: Without the arising of the mind of enlightenment, Buddhahood will never be attained, and there is no other way to accomplish the benefit of oneself and others in samsara. Thus it is said. In terms of the essence, there are four: definition, basis, classification, and the difference between aspiration and engagement. The first is as it appears in the texts. The second is that the main consciousness of mind is associated with the desire for the fruit of enlightenment, as it is said in the Sunlight Commentary: What is called the generation of the mind, the mind is consciousness, which is discernment. What is discernment? It is the consciousness of mind, because it focuses on all white dharmas, therefore it exists there. Thus it is said. The third is that, in terms of essence, there are two types: aspiration and engagement. In terms of cause, there are two types: those obtained through habituation and those obtained through nature. In terms of friends, there are twenty-two types. In terms of stages, there are four types, as it is said in the Ornament Sutra: The mind of enlightenment on the grounds, aspiration and higher intention, purity and other maturation, likewise, the abandonment of obscurations. Thus it is said. The fourth is that some consider aspiration to be mainly the desire for enlightenment, and engagement to be entering the path of generosity after taking vows. Sherjung Lodro said that the mind that desires enlightenment, which is not accompanied by the help of practicing generosity, is aspiration, and that which is accompanied is engagement. This also reveals the view of Senge Zangpo. Second, there are seven aspects of the meaning of the branches: the essence of the mind of enlightenment, the difference of conventional engagement, the nature of ultimate non-conceptualization, the distinction of names and meanings combined with the stages of the path, how the two Bodhicittas arise, the twenty-two classifications illustrated by examples, and the benefits of generating the Bodhicitta. The first is that, for the sake of others, desiring the fruit of perfect and complete enlightenment, associated with this

Thinking. Second, it starts with "wishing in the mind," etc., which is easy to understand. The difference between aspiration and engagement is, for example, just as one wants to go to a certain place, the thought of wanting to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of others is aspiration, and just as one goes to a destination, entering the path that leads to Buddhahood and wanting to practice that path is engagement. So it is said. Similarly, a wise person who wants to accomplish the benefit of oneself and others should understand the difference between these two meanings in sequence, just as one understands the difference between these two examples. Third, from the difference in scriptures, it is to listen to the Dharma after making great offerings and service to the Nirmanakaya Buddha, the fully enlightened one. From the difference in practice, it is to accumulate the collections of merit and wisdom in countless eons. From the difference in realization, because of the arising of the wisdom that does not distinguish between grasper and grasped in all dharmas, such a mind is considered the mind of ultimate truth. Fourth, if we differentiate the generation of the mind according to how it accords with the bhumis, there are four types: below the path of joining, there is equality of self and other, but this is not directly realized; instead, these are made into objects of interest as generalities, and thus it is the generation of the mind arising from interest. From the first to the seventh bhumis, there is the realization of equality of self and other, and the superior intention is completely pure. In the three pure bhumis, there is the non-conceptual wisdom, and the generation of the mind that matures without effort. This is considered to be a different generation of the mind from the previous two. Similarly, in the Buddha bhumi, because the two obscurations have been abandoned, there is the generation of the mind that abandons obscurations. Fifth, the mind of aspiration and engagement also arises from the five powers: the power of associating with virtuous friends, the power of awakening the Mahayana lineage, the power of virtuous roots, the power of hearing the Mahayana Dharma, and the power of familiarizing oneself with generosity and other virtuous deeds. Among these, the mind that arises from the power of friends is unstable, while the other four are stable. These are said to be the minds that arise from being shown by others. Sixth, from the perspective of examples, the Ornament for Clear Realization speaks of twenty-two distinctions of the mind of enlightenment. Among them, the first mind of enlightenment, which possesses desire, is like the earth.
