Therefore, doing so is to familiarize oneself with the truths that have already been realized. Those with omniscience have mastery over the path of no more learning, and therefore, in the case of remainder, they have mastery over abiding in comfort in the present life, and entering into non-remainder. Thirdly, as for the basis, those in the desire realm have all the faculties of existence, and except for the three uncontaminated ones included by earth, they have everything. Except for the male and female faculties and suffering and displeasure, the rest are present in the two lower dhyanas, because they are free from attachment to sexual intercourse, so there are no male and female faculties; because there is no non-virtue, there is no ripening of suffering and displeasure; because there is no harm done to body and mind, these also do not have a corresponding cause. Except for pleasure, the remaining seventeen are present in the third dhyana, because they are free from attachment to joy, so there is no pleasure. Except for happiness, the fourth dhyana possesses the remaining sixteen, because it is liberated from the eight faults of dhyana, so there is no happiness. As the Treasury says: "Because of freedom from eight faults, the fourth is unwavering." And it is said that the eight faults are: "Investigation and analysis, breathing, and the four beginning with happiness should be known." Thus it is said. The five, such as faith, and the three uncontaminated ones, in the manner of possessing the eight virtues, equanimity, life force, and mind, eleven in all, are present in all the formless realms. In the peak of existence, they are not present in the manner of being included by the third uncontaminated one, because the uncontaminated does not rely on anything there. As it is also said, in the Treasury it says: "In the desire realm and the peak of existence, the limbs of the path to enlightenment are abandoned." Commentary on the fifth chapter from the Collected Compendium of Vinaya.

It is said that the meaning is: At the beginning of practicing the path, one should rely on a noble person. Relying on a virtuous spiritual friend is the cause of the complete fulfillment of pure conduct, as stated by the Able One. As it is said in the sutra: Ananda, for example, a virtuous spiritual friend and a virtuous friend are the complete fulfillment of pure conduct. Why is that? Ananda, those who are subject to birth are completely liberated from birth by relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. Because it is so, one should always rely on a noble person, just as many beings attain peace by relying on the Victorious One. In this context, pure conduct is: Here, it is the path of liberation, because it abandons all the faults of existence and aims for the meaning of Brahma Nirvana. The second is: What are the characteristics of a noble person? A superior teacher who possesses the training of morality, is disciplined. Possesses the training of mind, is peaceful. Possesses the training of wisdom, is nearly peaceful. Has more qualities of understanding than the student. Is diligent in the work of benefiting others with joy. Is rich in the teachings of the three baskets. Thoroughly understands the suchness of reality, and speaks to others according to understanding, and is skilled in expression. Does not look at material things, and has the nature of loving students. One should rely on those who speak of instructions and follow-up instructions without weariness, as stated in the Ornament Sutra. The second has three: How the Dharma is taught. The nature of the Dharma to be taught. The distinction of the three baskets that can be taught is shown. The first has three: The way to tame the student's mind. The way to follow the sharp and dull faculties. The way to explain the essence itself extensively. The first is: In addition, when the teacher teaches the sacred Dharma, some students think, how can someone like me accomplish liberation and omniscience, and become timid. For those who are timid, give up effort. Is there liberation from poverty? And so on, the faults of timidity. And, because sentient beings become human, in every immeasurable moment, they attain perfect enlightenment, therefore, one should not accept timidity. And so on, to raise the mind. Some who are distracted and wild for the sake of desire, use it for good deeds.
