It is formation. Birth is, first, causing what has not been obtained to be obtained, causing it to enter equally among people, and causing what has already been obtained to become familiar, also causing it to manifest in the realm of form. In the formless realm, there is no such manifestation, because the suffering of coarse feelings and thoughts all cause it to manifest and enter here. Those who are formless, because they dwell in the liberation of tranquility, do not make the effort to dwell here. Second, the order of the faculties that accomplish that path. The first of the two, summary and detailed explanation. There are fourteen faculties of all afflictions, such as the eye, and eight faculties of purification, such as faith, for a total of twenty-two faculties. The first fourteen are the masters of the side of all afflictions, and the last eight are the masters of the side of purification. Thus, the six faculties, such as the eye, are established in the sense of being the masters of fully showing the objects of sentient beings that can be eaten, because the name of sentient beings' objects is applied to the six internal sources. In the sense of being the masters of producing sentient beings' objects that have not been born, the two faculties of male and female are established, because by the power of those two, birth is taken in the womb. In the sense of being the masters of causing sentient beings' objects that have already been born to remain, and causing those who have remained to die and transmigrate, the faculty of life is established, because from their presence or absence, the names of living and dying are applied. Those are established as the masters of the objects of sentient beings that can be eaten, and in the sense of being the masters of the objects to be eaten, the five faculties of feeling are established. Why are the last eight the masters of the side of purification? By the power of the means of being the masters of the basis of purification, higher rebirth, the five faculties such as faith are established, and in the sense of being the masters of the nature of purification, definite goodness, the unknown to be known, etc., are established. Also, there are two purifications, namely the worldly path and the path beyond the world. The five, such as faith, are the masters of accomplishing the worldly path, and the three, such as the unknown to be known, are the masters of accomplishing the path beyond the world. Second, the detailed explanation has three parts: showing the number of names.

And, the explanation of their respective functions, and the investigation of where they are located. First, the six faculties from the eye to the mind, as well as the male faculty, the female faculty, the life faculty, and the five feeling faculties are: bodily feelings, pleasure and pain; and mental feelings, pleasant and unpleasant; and bodily and mental feelings, equanimity, the two combined. These are the fourteen all-pervasive afflictive faculties. Faith that is manifestly convincing, as well as diligence that delights in virtue, as well as mindfulness that does not forget the object, as well as samadhi of one-pointedness of mind, as well as wisdom that thoroughly distinguishes dharmas, are the five wholesome faculties. The four feelings other than unpleasant feeling at the time of the path of seeing, as well as the five faculties of faith, etc., nine in total, are the faculty that makes everything unknown known. Those nine faculties at the time of the path of meditation are called the faculty of complete knowledge. For those nine faculties, at the time of the path of no more learning, they are called the faculty of complete knowledge. These are the three uncontaminated faculties. Second, the twenty-two faculties, because they function, are faculties. What functions on what? The five material faculties, such as the eye, are because they function on their respective objects from form to touch, and the mind functions on all objects. The six, such as the eye, are faculties. The two faculties of male and female are faculties because they function to distinguish the differences of beings such as male and female. The life faculty is a faculty because it functions to maintain the continuity of similar types. Life is also called longevity, and it is the non-associated formation that is the basis of warmth in the lower realms and the basis of consciousness in the formless realms. The five feeling faculties are those that function on all-pervasive afflictions such as attachment, because attachment arises from pleasure and pleasantness, aversion arises from pain and unpleasantness, and equanimity arises from ignorance. The five, such as faith, function on worldly purification. Making everything known functions on the path of seeing, because it makes the truths that have not been directly realized directly realized. Making everything known is on the path of meditation.
