Based on the Earth Discourse, it is the view that there is a permanent, independent self other than the aggregates, like the chief substance view of the Tirthikas. The view of holding to extremes is to view the self grasped by the view of fear as either permanent or annihilated. Wrong view is to slander karma and its effects, the four truths, liberation, etc. The view of holding views as supreme is to be attached to the view of the perishable and the view of extremes, and to manifest attachment to their basis, the aggregates, as supreme, excellent, etc. The view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme is the view of being attached to the moral discipline and asceticism of inferior, evil-view followers, thinking that they can liberate the self, etc. The twenty near afflictions are the twenty from anger to non-intelligence, because they cause the mind to be near affliction, they are called near afflictions. Among them, anger is when a harmer is near, immediately thinking of striking with weapons, etc., or harming with punishments, etc. Holding grudges is to not forget the harm done in the past, to hold onto resentment and want to retaliate. Both of these belong to the category of anger. Concealing is to hide and conceal from others the transgressions, such as downfalls, that have been committed. This belongs to the category of ignorance. Annoyance is, due to the power of extreme mental anguish, uttering harsh, coarse words and constantly scolding. Jealousy is to be intolerant of others' prosperity, such as obtaining retinues and enjoyments, and to feel agitated and disturbed in the heart. Both of these also belong to the category of hatred. Stinginess is to hold onto possessions tightly and be unwilling to give them away, belonging to the category of desire. Deceit is to show deceptive behavior through body and speech with the intention of deceiving and enticing others. Cunning is when others reveal one's faults, using flattery and other means to conceal the faults, the mind is deceitful and crooked. Both of these belong to the category of desire and ignorance. Pride is the contaminated joy of being attached to one's own wealth, such as body and enjoyments, based on being free from illness, being in the prime of youth, etc. This belongs to desire.
