The body of the two. The first is: the internal sense bases such as the eye, which are form. The second is: the external sense bases such as form, which are form. The third is: the support of one's own sense faculty and the sense faculties of others, which are form, because they become both cause and sense base. The three, feeling and so on, are also similarly threefold; they should be understood appropriately from the perspective of the support and the object. Dharma includes mental factors other than feeling, non-associated compositional factors, and form included in the element of dharma, as well as the unconditioned. The second is: the own-characteristic, such as the body, the nature of each, such as the elements and what is made from the elements, and the general characteristics, such as impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Or, the body is impure, feeling is suffering, the mind is impermanent, and phenomena are selfless. The third is: wisdom that distinguishes the individual own and general characteristics of the body and so on, and mindfulness that does not forget its object. Thus, wisdom looks at the own and general characteristics, and mindfulness repeatedly focuses on that very object, therefore it is called mindfulness. The fourth is: in order to enter the four truths, thus, mindfulness of the body is to enter the truth of suffering, because one will understand the distinctions of the suffering of the body, the suffering of conditioning, and the suffering of change. Mindfulness of feeling is to enter the truth of origin, because one understands that the main origin, craving, is the cause of the three, pleasure and so on, and therefore wants to abandon it. Mindfulness of the mind is to enter the truth of cessation, because one contemplates that the consciousness, which is separate from self, is destroyed in an instant, and there is no fear of the danger of self-annihilation in nirvana, therefore one wants to realize cessation. Mindfulness of phenomena is to enter the truth of the path, because one contemplates that phenomena such as attachment are to be abandoned, and pure phenomena such as faith are to be cultivated, and therefore wants to meditate on the path. That meaning is also in the Madhyāntavibhāga.

To eliminate evil destinies, for the cause of desire, for the root and non-ignorance, to enter the four truths, cultivate mindfulness. Thus it is said. Fifth, in the path of accumulation, after the completion of hearing and thinking, cultivate the unpleasant and mindfulness of breathing in and out, making the mind workable through the path of tranquility, and cultivate in order to generate the path of insight. The second also has five aspects: the object, the method of cultivation, the nature, the fruit of cultivation, and the boundary. The first is: what is to be abandoned are all the aspects of affliction, and what is to be adopted are the aspects of purification that have arisen, and causing what has not arisen to arise. The second is: in order to abandon the evil and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, and not to generate those that have not arisen, and to increase the wholesome dharmas that have arisen from above and to generate those that have not arisen, generate desire, initiate diligence, hold the mind well, and abide well. The third is: the four right abandonments are the nature of diligence that performs the function of diminishing what is to be abandoned and increasing the antidote. The fourth is: what is to be abandoned is diminished without remainder, and the antidote is obtained without remainder. The fifth is: this is cultivated in the middle of the path of accumulation. When cultivating by properly examining the objects of mindfulness, after seeing the faults and virtues of abandonment and antidote, diligence arises to engage in taking and abandoning them. Why is it called right abandonment? It is so called because it abandons unfavorable aspects. The third also has five aspects: the object, the method of cultivation, the nature, the fruit of cultivation, and the boundary. The first is: the activities accomplished by samadhi, such as illusion and transformation. The second is, as it says in the Madhyantavibhāga: 'Five faults are eliminated, eight mental activities are cultivated, arising from the cause of reliance.' Thus, cultivate with eight mental activities, which are: desire, effort, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. There are also five unfavorable aspects, as it says in the Madhyantavibhāga: 'Laziness and instruction, forgetfulness, sinking and agitation, non-attention and attention, these are considered the five faults.' Thus, one should not initially apply oneself to cultivation.
