There are two. The Nirvana without remainder is the Dharmakaya of the Buddha, which does not abide in the extreme of cyclic existence because it has abandoned afflictions through wisdom, and does not abide in the extreme of peaceful Nirvana because compassion for the sake of others is continuous. As it is said: When the three bodies are accomplished, the passing away with aggregates is a description of the Rupakaya. Because it is separated from all aggregates, the Dharmakaya has no aggregates. Thus it is said. The characteristics are: The characteristics of the cessation truth as described above are cessation, peace, excellence, and definite emergence, which are four aspects. These are, in order: Cessation because all afflictions have ceased; peace because the fire of suffering is completely extinguished; excellence because it is pure by abandoning afflictions and happy by reducing suffering, therefore it is the supreme object desired by those who desire liberation; definite emergence because it has become the basis of lasting benefit. Fourth, there are four ways to explain the truth of the path: the basis, the characteristics, the preliminary practices for the general path, and the detailed explanation of the specifics. The first is: the path of accumulation, which is the antidote that ripens the mindstream; the path of joining, which is the antidote that closely abandons; the path of seeing, which is the antidote that abandons one aspect; the path of meditation, which is the antidote that abandons all; and the path of no more learning, which is the complete abandonment, these are the five. Also, the two knowledges of exhaustion and non-arising, which are knowing that afflictions are exhausted as exhausted, and knowing that suffering does not arise as not arising, are also distinctions of the path of no more learning. Among these, the two paths of accumulation and joining, and the path of meditation with outflows, are paths, but not the truth of the path, because they have outflows. The path of seeing, the path of meditation without outflows, and the path of no more learning are the truth of the path. Second, the characteristics are: path, reason, accomplishment, and definite emergence, which are four. These are also in order: Because it gradually leads to the city of liberation, it is the path; because it is the antidote to abandoning afflictions, it is the reason; because it accomplishes the mind without being mistaken, it is the accomplishment; because it completely liberates from existence and unfailingly leads to the permanent place, it is the definite emergence. Third, there are five preliminaries for the general path: generating the three wisdoms, abiding in solitude of body and mind, abandoning the eight worldly dharmas, and cultivating qualities of purification.

One should rely on twelve things and abandon five wrong livelihoods. First, in the stage of the path of accumulation, one should meditate on the twelve aspects of the path, which are the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, and the four legs of miraculous power. How should one meditate? As it is said, "Discipline is like the earth, the foundation for all virtues." Thus, abiding in the discipline of the seven types of individual liberation vows, one should turn away from all misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. After that, one should listen to the scriptures that are in accordance with the realization of truth, and contemplate the meaning of what is heard through reasoning. With the wisdom born of thought that is proper attention, one should apply oneself to meditation by focusing one-pointedly on the meaning of what is thought. What are these three wisdoms of hearing, thinking, and meditation? The Vaibhashikas say that the wisdom of hearing has only names as its object, the wisdom of thinking has both names and meanings as its object, and the wisdom of meditation has only meanings as its object. In that case, it is impossible for one wisdom to focus on both name and meaning. The part that focuses on the name becomes the wisdom born of hearing, and the part that focuses on the meaning becomes the wisdom born of meditation. Therefore, the wisdom born of thinking that focuses on both name and meaning is impossible. Master Vasubandhu said so. Therefore, the wisdom that arises from listening to reliable teachings is the wisdom of hearing, the wisdom that arises from determining the meaning of what is heard through reasoning is the wisdom of thinking, and the wisdom that arises from meditating one-pointedly on the meaning of what is thought is the wisdom of meditation. These are also, in order, the wisdom of gaining certainty about the meaning by relying on sound alone, relying on reasoning, and gaining certainty about the meaning through the power of meditation without relying on sound concepts. Second, on what basis should these wisdoms of hearing, thinking, and meditation be generated? For the body, whether one is a householder or a renunciate, one should distance oneself from the noise of idle talk and socializing, and distance oneself from distractions such as improper attention. Only then will these yogas arise. Those who are not content with meager robes and alms, and those who are greedy for good things and much wealth, cannot generate hearing, thinking, and meditation.
