The nine grounds are: This (referring to something or someone) has harmed me. Is harming. Will harm. Has bestowed favor on my enemy. Is bestowing. Will bestow. Has harmed my relatives and friends. Is harming. Will harm. That's it (the nine grounds). Second, the separate explanations, among which is the first of three parts. The explanation of what is abandoned by seeing the path: In the desire realm, the afflictions that are abandoned merely by seeing the four noble truths are forty, that is, the afflictions that are abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering, such as desire and so on, are ten. Similarly, there are ten that are abandoned by seeing the truth of the path. In the two upper realms (the form realm and the formless realm), for each of the four noble truths, anger is abandoned, so there are nine, that is, four nines are thirty-six. Altogether, there are one hundred and twelve afflictions to be abandoned by seeing the path in the three realms. Among them, the view of the perishable aggregate and the extreme view are part of the imputed, and the latter three views (view of holding views as supreme, view of holding moral discipline and vows as supreme, and wrong view) completely, as well as doubt, and the desire, anger, pride, and ignorance that arise from wrong thoughts about these views are all abandoned by seeing the path. Second, the explanation of what is abandoned by meditation: The four types of desire and so on that arise from wrong thoughts about objects, as well as the co-emergent view of the perishable aggregate and the extreme view, there are six afflictions to be abandoned by meditation in the desire realm. In the two upper realms, there are five each, excluding anger. In short, there are sixteen afflictions to be abandoned by meditation in the three realms. If they are distinguished by ground and type, then each of the nine grounds can be divided into large, medium, and small, so each ground is divided into nine types, for a total of four hundred and fourteen. Third, the way to identify and abandon the common ones is: Among them, the afflictions that are abandoned by seeing the path arise from listening to the wrong teachings of bad spiritual friends, and so on, so they are called imputed, such as the belief of non-Buddhists that there is a self and Ishvara, etc. The afflictions that are abandoned by seeing the path are easy to abandon, so they do not depend on the difference between ground and type, while the afflictions that are abandoned by meditation have been habitual from beginningless time, so they follow all sentient beings, so they are called co-emergent, such as even animals have the thought that the five aggregates are me, etc. The afflictions that are abandoned by seeing the path are easy to abandon, so they do not depend on the difference between ground and type, and they are abandoned merely by seeing the nature of the true truth, so they are called sudden abandonment, that is, the suchness of the truth of suffering.

If one sees the suffering of the three realms, it is like abandoning all that should be abandoned at once. The afflictions to be abandoned by meditation are difficult to abandon because they have been followed since beginningless time. Therefore, they will be gradually abandoned according to the differences of ground and type. Second, the characteristic is: As mentioned above, the characteristic of the origin of suffering has four aspects, namely: cause, accumulation, increase, and condition. Among them, actions and afflictions are called causes because they establish the habits of existence. Because they produce various kinds of suffering substances, they are called accumulation. Because they produce different places, times, and forms of beings, they are called increase. Because they abandon the body that has already been taken and take the body that has not been taken, they are called conditions. Third, in terms of the truth of cessation: there are two aspects, the basis and the characteristic. First, the nature of the two is: the cessation through discrimination that abandons the habits of the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, by the wisdom arising from meditation of the mundane and supramundane, is the truth of cessation. The nature of the Dharma realm is naturally pure, free from adventitious stains to be abandoned, and is also the truth of cessation. Second, in terms of classification: there are two types of nirvana, the Lesser Vehicle and the Great Vehicle. First, the Lesser Vehicle is further divided into two types: with remainder and without remainder. The first is: like killing a thief without destroying the village, an Arhat abandons all the final afflictions, abandoning them in such a way that they will not arise again, but the cessation through discrimination where the contaminated aggregates have not ceased is the nirvana with remainder of aggregates. Like the village being destroyed naturally after the thief is killed, the mental continuum is cut off by abandoning the formations of life, and the cessation through discrimination where all the contaminated aggregates have ceased is the nirvana without remainder of aggregates. As it is said, the sutra says: "With an undiminished body, experiencing feelings, his mind is liberated, like a lamp extinguished." This is the nirvana with remainder. It also says: "Where the body is destroyed, feelings cease, perception is pacified, and consciousness is extinguished, this is the end of suffering." This is the nirvana without remainder. The Great Vehicle's nirvana with remainder is: the form body
