Among them, only those (meditations) have both purity and non-leakage (qualities); the others have only purity (quality). As it is said in the Abhidharmakośa: "They have eight proximate concentrations, purity, neither pleasure nor pain. Some say the first dhyana also has noble ones." This is the meaning. The ultimate result of the path of application, which is mental engagement, is the path of liberation that abandons the ninth type of affliction. At that time, the actual mind of dhyana is attained. From the first dhyana to the peak of existence, one cultivates the seven minds mentioned above. Secondly, the first of the four actualities is: the characteristics of the four dhyana actualities are: the first dhyana actuality has five branches, namely: investigation and analysis are branches of antidote, because they abandon desire for the desire realm and harmful thoughts. Joy and happiness born of solitude are branches of benefit, because they pacify body and mind. One-pointedness of mind is a branch of abiding, because relying on it, the branches of antidote and benefit arise. The special first dhyana actuality is a samadhi without investigation, only with analysis. The second dhyana has four branches, inner clarity is a branch of antidote, because it makes one free from attachment to investigation and analysis. Joy and happiness born of samadhi are branches of benefit. Samadhi is a branch of abiding. Inner clarity is the three: mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity. In the first dhyana, investigation and analysis are achieved through effort, and they do not deviate from one's own conviction, so they are not listed as branches. In the second dhyana, because the effort to abandon investigation and analysis is made, it is listed as a branch. Also, because joy overwhelms (others), it is not called by its own name, but is indicated by the single name "inner clarity." As it is said in the Abhidharmakośa: "Inner clarity is faith." The third dhyana has five branches: equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness are three branches of antidote, because they make one free from attachment to joy. Happiness without joy is a branch of benefit. Samadhi is a branch of abiding. Here, because one is free from attachment to joy, the three, mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, are all called by their own names. In the first and second dhyanas, the feeling of the mind-consciousness and its objects is pacified, those joys

Therefore, making the consciousness and its retinue calm is called joy, and through meditative stabilization making it able to function, looking inward, making the faculties and their places calm, is called bliss. In the third dhyana, abandoning the part disturbed by consciousness and joy, in order to make the faculties and their places calm, therefore, the calmness itself of the feeling of consciousness and its retinue is called bliss without joy. The fourth dhyana has four branches, namely, equanimity and completely pure mindfulness are the branches of antidote, because they make one free from attachment to those pleasures. Spontaneously arising equanimity is the branch of benefit, and completely pure meditative stabilization is the branch of the basis. Mindfulness and equanimity, because they are not free from attachment to the bliss of dhyana, are not called completely pure, but in the fourth dhyana, because it is liberated from the eight faults of dhyana such as bliss, it is called completely pure. The eight faults are: investigation and analysis, outgoing and incoming breaths, pleasure and pain, pleasant and unpleasant. As it is said: Investigation and analysis and pure breaths, pleasure and the like are the four (faults). Second, the preliminary and actual practice of the formless absorptions: all four formless absorptions, the lower realms are not pacified due to short lifespans and are completely ignorant, and the higher realms are the opposite, distinguished by being peaceful and excellent, are cultivated through seven types of attention, such as skillful discernment. Among them, the sphere of infinite space is: during the preliminary practice, breaking down the perceptions of form and obstruction, thinking that space is infinite, and during the actual practice, being free from attachment to form, only focusing on the meditative stabilization of the four aggregates of its own realm. The sphere of nothingness is the peaceful abode. The sphere of infinite consciousness is: during the preliminary practice, thinking that the consciousness of the sphere of infinite space is also infinite, and during the actual practice, being free from attachment to space, only focusing on the meditative stabilization of the four aggregates of its own realm. The sphere of nothingness is: during the preliminary practice, thinking that all phenomena are nothing, and during the actual practice.
