Because that would become the fault of never existing. Moreover, all things are unborn in the ultimate truth, because whether the result exists or not, it is empty of arising. The reason is established, if the result already exists, then arising is contradictory, because an accomplished thing does not depend on others. Non-existent things cannot produce non-existent things, because non-existent things do not have the function of a cause. As the Two Truths says: "What exists does not arise, because it already exists; what does not exist does not arise, because it does not exist." Moreover, all things are without inherent existence, because they are interdependent, like an illusion, this is the reason of interdependence. The reason for this pervasion is that ignorance is the condition for action, so the root of the twelve links of interdependence is said to be ignorance, therefore all things are illusory appearances and are empty in nature. The Svātantrika-Madhyamikas assert that things are without inherent existence through these four great arguments. From the detailed explanation of self and other schools in the Compendium of Scriptures, this is the commentary on the fourth chapter. Chapter Five. Second, in the path to be practiced, there are two paths: the common Lesser Vehicle and the uncommon Great Vehicle. First, in the common Lesser Vehicle, there are two: the actual path and the basis for accomplishing it. First, in the actual path, there are two: the worldly path and the transcendental path. First, there is the preparatory stage for these two, which is divided into two: brief explanation and detailed explanation. First, through the seven mental engagements of application and main practice, the path of the four dhyānas and the four formless absorptions can be perfected. Second, the detailed explanation is further divided into four parts: the classification of the names of the seven mental engagements, the method of abandoning what is to be abandoned in the nine grounds, the method of cultivating with outflows and without outflows, and the distinctions of each of the seven. First, what are the seven mental engagements? They are: the mental engagement of thoroughly knowing the characteristics, the mental engagement arising from aspiration, the mental engagement of extreme solitude, the mental engagement of gathering joy, the mental engagement of the limit of application, and the mental engagement of the result of the limit of application. Second: Because of the initial, intermediate, and final abandonment, each ground has three great, medium, and small afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation, and each of these is further divided into three: great, medium, and small. Therefore, the desire realm and the dhyānas.

four, and the four formless ones. In each of these nine realms, there are nine times nine things to be abandoned through meditation. Third, these seven mental activities are also divided into two types: contaminated worldly and uncontaminated transcendental. The contaminated involves contemplating the higher and lower realms as having aspects of tranquility and coarseness, while the uncontaminated involves contemplating the aspects of truth such as impermanence. Fourth, among these, the mental activity of thoroughly understanding characteristics is: contemplating that the lower realms such as the desire realm are suffering and have many afflictions, short lifespans, etc., and are extremely unpeaceful, while the higher realms such as the first dhyana are the opposite of this and are extremely peaceful, and discriminating through listening and thinking. The mental activity arising from aspiration is the continuous familiarization with the very thorough understanding of characteristics, included in the path of meditative cultivation and application. The mental activity arising from extreme solitude is the uninterrupted path that abandons the three great categories of what is to be abandoned by meditation. Gathering joy is touching small joy and happiness by abandoning coarse afflictions, and is the uninterrupted path that abandons the three medium categories. After that, since most afflictions have been abandoned, and manifest afflictions are difficult to arise, in order to examine whether afflictions will arise again, when striving in this way, such as by mentally engaging with characteristics that are in accordance with the arising of afflictions, it is the mental activity of examination. Having examined in this way, the mental activity at the end of application is to completely abandon the afflictions that have arisen again through antidotes, and is the uninterrupted path that abandons the three small categories. Some early Tibetan elders call the mental activity of examination a special path. These six mental activities are called "close absorption," and the close absorption of the first dhyana is called "unobstructed," because by relying on it, one can abandon all the afflictions of the three realms. The close absorption of the first dhyana has both contaminated and uncontaminated aspects, while the close absorptions of the second dhyana and above are only contaminated, because they do not rely on the noble path. Without obtaining the actual state of the lower realm, one cannot obtain the close absorption of the higher realm, and from the close absorption of the higher realm, it is easier to cultivate the path by relying on the actual state of the lower realm. All close absorptions have a feeling of equanimity, and
