All phenomena that arise from causes and conditions, that is, dependently arising forms and other worldly things, are the basis for naming. Because ordinary people cling to their reality, they are called conventional truths. Illusions and dreams are merely conventional and not real, because the world does not give them the name of reality. As it is said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: "Whatever is grasped by the six senses without harm, the world says is real; the rest is only what the world says, and should be regarded as false according to the world." As it is said. That conventional truth is also regarded as true by ordinary people who are obscured by the darkness of ignorance. For the noble ones, it is merely conventional and cannot be called true, because in the subsequent attainment they also regard it as false like an illusion. As it is said: "Because the nature of ignorance obscures, it is called conventional; whatever false appearances are created by it, the Buddha said is conventional truth; all false things are conventional." As it is said. The Sixty Stanza Reasoning says that arising and destruction are merely appearances of consciousness and do not exist in external objects. If so, what are the four elements and other external objects that are spoken of? The elements such as earth and the things that arise from form and other elements are spoken of with reference to the apprehended aspect of consciousness that appears here and there, so they are completely contained within the name consciousness of the manifestor, and therefore it is said that they do not exist in external objects. In the Commentary on the Awakening Mind, it is also said: "Just as a magnet attracts iron, so too, because of the complete holding of the alaya consciousness, the dependent body also completely moves." Therefore, it is said that the body and enjoyment appearing as places are all appearances of the alaya. The teacher Chandrakirti and others believe that conventional truth is established based on worldly conventions. As it is said in the Engaging in the Middle Way: "As you accept that other-dependent reality, I also do not accept conventional truth; in order to establish what is established by the world, these things, although non-existent, can exist; I say that they exist before the world, I say it according to the world." As it is said. The alaya consciousness is provisional, not definitive.

Therefore, as it is said therein: "The ālaya-vijñāna exists and the pudgala exists, these aggregates alone exist." As it is said, it is like that for those who cannot understand such profound meaning. If the ālaya-vijñāna itself is the agent of the place and the body, etc., then how can one say that Īśvara is the cause? "The cow is the cause of cow-flies, etc., the crystal is the cause of water, etc., tiger meat is like the branches, etc., that is the cause of all sentient beings." Just like that, it is the same as believing that Īśvara is the creator of all things, except that Īśvara is permanent and the ālaya-vijñāna is impermanent, that is the only difference. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the Entering [the Middle Way], it says: "All the dry firewood of knowable things, being burned, is pacified, that is the dharmakāya of the victors. At that time, there is no birth and no cessation, the cessation of mind is the manifestation of the body." And in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, it says: "When things and non-things do not exist before the mind, then there is no other aspect, therefore, it is completely pacified without an object." Therefore, thinking that this is saying that the Buddha has no wisdom, in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, Entering the Middle Way, it says: "The Buddha is shown to have no wisdom." It seems to be saying that. But those treatises are not saying that the Buddha has no wisdom, and those teachers do not believe that the Buddha has no wisdom in conventional terms, nor do they believe that wisdom is substantially existent as others believe. However, even in mere conventional terms, they acknowledge the self-nature wisdom that arises dependently, free from the four extremes. Even so, because that principle is very profound, others cannot understand it, and those teachers merely misunderstand their intention. The Prāsaṅgika Madhyamikas, because their own system has nothing to establish, do not accept autonomous reasoning, and they refute all the elaborations of falling into extremes with the four types of reasoning. Among them, the inference that is known to other opponents is the refutation of true existence with the sign that is accepted by the proponents of entities. For example, the Vaibhāṣikas acknowledge that the eye sense is truly able to see forms, and they believe that it cannot see itself, then, whatever cannot see itself is not able to see others, like a pot. The eye also cannot see itself. Like that. As it is said in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: "If one's own self"
