, and they consider "I" as the doer of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Time, direction, and space are also considered like "I" – mindless, permanent, all-pervasive, and without function. Among these, time is the cause of conceptualizing temporal phenomena such as long and short durations; direction is the cause of conceptualizing spatial phenomena such as east and so on. Mind is a permanent atom, and when it enters the gates of the senses such as the ears, it generates the consciousness of that particular sense. So they say. The twenty-five qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) are: the five intellects of the senses such as the eyes, the two of pleasure and pain, attachment and hatred, dharma and non-dharma, conditioned phenomena, and the power of effort. These thirteen are the qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) of "I." Some say that the latter two are qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) of the mind. As long as these qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) gather in "I," "I" is in samsara. When, through contemplating all that belongs to "I" as suffering, one becomes detached from what belongs to "I," no longer accepting it, and the qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) no longer gather in "I," it is called liberation. As it is said in the Madhyamakahṛdaya: The yogi who cuts off the qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) of "I" such as wisdom, and uproots them, the mind that abides in the concept of "I," is known as the liberation of the Vaiśeṣika school. So it is taught. Numbers such as one and two, magnitudes such as large and small, long and short, the individual that differentiates substances from each other, the contact where substances touch each other, the separation where contact is broken, and non-otherness, these are said to be qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) of direction and time, but they are also qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) of other substances, not necessarily limited to direction and time alone. The five objects of sense such as form are qualities (गुण, guṇa, quality) of the five elements: form is a quality (गुण, guṇa, quality) of fire, sound is a quality (गुण, guṇa, quality) of space, smell is a quality (गुण, guṇa, quality) of earth, taste is a quality (गुण, guṇa, quality) of water, and touch is a quality (गुण, guṇa, quality) of wind. The feeling of pleasure and pain is the mind's consciousness that adapts to "I" and the same object, and is considered the inner consciousness that is knowable by other objects. The flame rising upwards, water flowing downwards, etc., are said to be caused by the actions of dharma and non-dharma. Action is lifting, placing, stretching, contracting, walking, etc., which are different from substance. Generality is of two types: supreme generality (பொது, potu, generality) and limited generality (பொது, potu, generality). The first is the permanent and unique one called "existence itself."

It appears as the manifestation pervading all three: substance, quality, and action. That is solely the universal that is distinct from and different from particulars. The temporary universal is substance itself, action itself, quality itself, and so on. Those are both universal and particular. What is solely particular is the limit involved in permanent substance, which is the subtle particles of the four great elements and the liberated self, and it is solely involved in mind and is solely the object of yogis. The combination of sense organs, objects, qualities, and those possessing qualities with each other is considered the relationship of aggregation. Some among the Vaibhashikas consider Ishvara (自在天) as the creator. They say that when Ishvara wants to create the world, Ishvara, with wisdom as a precursor, the permanent subtle particles of the four great elements aggregate together, forming the circles of wind, earth, water, and fire, and then a blazing Brahma egg appears, and from within that appears Brahma with four faces and wearing a crown of matted hair, who creates the outer and inner containers and contents of the world. That's what they say. Third, explaining the tenets of the Logicians: The Logicians, in agreement with the Vaisheshikas, consider knowable things to be the six categories of meaning. The great sage Akshapada (足目) composed the treatises on logic, expounding the sixteen categories of meaning, the twenty-four refutations, and the twenty-two rebuttals. The twenty-four refutations and twenty-two rebuttals have been placed in the "Treasury of Logic and Reasoning," and if you want to know them, you should look there, as I have not written them here for fear of too many words. I have not seen a text that clearly explains the sixteen categories of meaning. There is only a rough one in the Charvaka (顺世外道), which analyzes in detail. The Logicians establish the syllogism: "A living body is possessed of a self, because it possesses life and so on." Although this has no subsequent concomitance, it is a reason that possesses only exclusion, because it is excluded from dissimilar instances such as a pot. That's what they say. Fourth, the tenets of the Vedic school: The Vedic school believes that Vishnu (遍入天) is eternal and liberated from things that exist and things that do not exist. As it says in the "Fifth Night Treatise": "Far beyond mere humans, completely abandoning existence and non-existence, definitely liberated from arising and ceasing, that...
