Fame ceases. Dust is a whirlwind. The conch shell is the roar of the south wind. Shadow is, even without a difference in appearance, the appearance of form. The sun is the rays of the sun. Appearance is, the light of the moon, stars, fire, and jewels, etc. Darkness is, where no visible object can be seen. These distinctions of form are explained because they are the objects of eye consciousness, and because they obstruct the understanding of other visible objects, they are also forms with obstruction. Sound arises from the cause of the grasped great elements, and from the cause of the ungrasped great elements, these two. Each of these is divided into two, indicating sentient beings and not indicating sentient beings, so there are four. Among them, that which arises from the cause of the grasped great elements and indicates sentient beings is like the sound of speech. That which does not indicate sentient beings is like the sound of hands. That which arises from the cause of the ungrasped great elements and indicates sentient beings is like the sound of emanated speech. That which does not indicate sentient beings is like the sound of wind and the sound of trees. Each of these four is divided into pleasant, beneficial to the ear, and unpleasant, unbeneficial, so there are eight types. Smell is fragrant, beneficial to the nose, and the opposite of that, two types. Each of these is divided into equal and unequal in terms of small and large components, so there are four types. Taste is the fundamental distinction, sweet like the taste of tree honey, sour like the taste of emblica, salty like the taste of salt, hot like the taste of long pepper, bitter like the taste of gentian, astringent like the taste of myrobalan, there are six. These fundamental tastes mix with each other, and the distinctions of their branches are mutually infinite. Touch is divided into elements and derived touch, the first has four, earth is, to the consciousness of the body, it appears as hard and adhesive. Water is, it appears as moist and wet. Fire is, warm or, if the degree is high, it burns. Wind is, it appears as light and moving. Among the derived touches, smoothness is, tolerable like the touch of an earring. Roughness is, intolerable like the touch of reeds, etc. Heaviness is, like the scale tipping downwards. Lightness is, the opposite of that. Cold is, any touch where water and wind are combined.
English
If it is close to cold, it seeks warmth. Hunger is a characteristic of tactile sensation in which the wind element is predominant, and it causes the desire to seek food called hunger. Thirst is a characteristic of tactile sensation in which the fire element is predominant, and it causes the desire to seek a drink called thirst. Therefore, hunger and thirst are, in order, the mental desire (Sanskrit: cetasika) to seek food and drink, and the tactile sensations that give rise to these mental states are given the names hunger and thirst, which is naming the cause by the result. The other four things, such as sound, are not objects of eye consciousness, so they are unmanifest form and have obstruction. Regarding these, the Abhidharmakośa says: "Form is divided into two and three types, sound has eight types, taste has six, smell has four, and touch has eleven entities." This is how it is said. Are these primary elements and derived forms simultaneous or do they exist separately? If in the desire realm, there are no faculties and no sound, like dust motes in sunlight, on a single aggregate of atoms, eight substances exist inseparably, what are they? They are the four elements and the forms of smell, taste, and touch. For those who have the body faculty, like the limbs of a person, adding the substance of the body faculty to the original eight substances makes nine substances. For those who have faculties other than the body faculty, like the eye, adding that faculty itself makes ten substances. If sound is included, there are eleven substances. In the form realm, since there are no smell and taste: In the form realm, there are no faculties, and the subtle dust without sound has six substances. Those with the body faculty have seven substances. Those with other faculties have eight substances. Combine it like this. The view that all aggregates are complete with the characteristics of the four elements is the doctrine of the Vaibhāṣika school. The Sautrāntika school believes that in any aggregate, whichever element is observed manifestly, it exists by its own nature, while the others exist as elements (Sanskrit: dhātu) but do not actually exist. Therefore, there are also aggregates formed from one element, such as a dry clod of earth. There are also aggregates formed from two elements, such as a moist clod of earth.
