However, since the bodies of the gods of the upper realms are controlled by meditative absorption, they are without any obstruction, and if they wish, even if they reside in the space pierced by the tip of a needle, there is no hindrance between them, it is said. Those also, as it is said: "The measure of the Jambudvipa people, four and a half cubits; The East and Godhaniya, the North called doubled increase; The body of the desire realm gods, a quarter from afar; Between one and a half increase; The first of the form realm, half a yojana; Above that, half and half increase; Above the Lesser Light, the body doubles and doubles again; The Cloudless Heaven, three yojanas." It is said like that. Regarding the size of the bodies of the three lower realms, since there is no certainty, it should be understood in the Dhammapada and so on, and in various Smṛtyupasthāna Sūtras and so on. Third, regarding the length of life: the lifespan of the Unpleasant Sound ones is a thousand years. The Western Godhaniya and the Eastern Pūrvavideha, the latter ones have their lifespan halved from the former ones. The Western Godhaniya is five hundred years, and the Eastern Pūrvavideha is two hundred and fifty years. In this Jambudvipa, the lifespan of people is not fixed, sometimes short and sometimes long, and eventually it will become short, to the point where the lifespan is only ten years, while the lifespan of the people of the first kalpa is immeasurable, because it cannot be counted by thousands and so on. The lifespan of the gods is: fifty human years is one day and night for the Four Great Kings, thirty days is a month, and twelve months is a year, and the Four Great Kings can live five hundred years. Both the length of days and lifespan, the Thirty-three and above, the upper layers are twice as large as the lower layers. One hundred human years is the day and night of the Thirty-three, and they can live a thousand years, and so on, it should be understood. The lifespan of the gods of the form realm is: the yojana that measures one's own body is equated with one kalpa, and the number of kalpas of lifespan is calculated by how many yojanas there are. 梵天眷属中劫二十，梵众天念诵中劫四十为一（大）劫，大梵天中劫六十为一劫半。从极光净天能活二大劫，到色究竟天能活一万六千大劫。应当这样理解。无色界众生，越往上的寿命比越往下的寿命增加二万中劫。这样，空无边处众生能活二万劫，有顶天众生能活八万劫。地狱的寿命是，从等活地狱到热地狱之间的六种地狱的寿命，依次变成欲界六天寿命的昼夜，而寿命的年数和欲界天一样。如此，四大天王天的寿命是，等活地狱的一昼夜是他们的五百年。他化自在天的寿命是热地狱的一昼夜，年数也和他们的年数一样。极热地狱能活半个中劫，无间地狱的寿命能活一个中劫。寿命长的旁生，如龙等，能活一个中劫。经中说：诸比丘，这八大龙王能安住一劫。以人间的三十天为一日，五百岁是饿鬼的寿命。《亲友书》中说：五千以及万，亦不免于死。就是这样说的。寒地狱的寿命是，用摩揭陀的量具，装满八十卡车的芝麻，每过一百年取出一粒，直到取完，这是疱疮地狱的寿命，下面的地狱寿命比上面的地狱增加二十倍。这些也如所说：若无悦意声，寿为一千（年），二则减半半。此处不定最后者，十年最初不可量。人寿仅有五十岁，欲天之下昼夜一，上二双倍增。有色无日月，以自身量劫。无色千劫者，二万增复增。从极光净天起为大劫，其下为一半。等活等。

The intermediate kalpa of the retinue of Brahma is twenty, and the intermediate kalpa of the chanting of Brahma's assembly is forty, which is made into one (great) kalpa. From the Great Brahma, sixty intermediate kalpas are made into one and a half kalpas. From the Abhasvara (Clear Light) heaven, one can live for two great kalpas, and the Akanistha (Highest Purity) heaven can live for sixteen thousand great kalpas. This should be understood. The formless beings, the higher ones live twenty thousand kalpas longer than the lower ones. Thus, the beings of the Akasanantyayatana (Limitless Space) live for twenty thousand kalpas, and the beings of the Bhavagra (Peak of Existence) live for eighty thousand kalpas. The lifespan of hell is that the lifespans of the six hells from Samjiva (Reviving) to Tapa (Hot) become the days and nights of the six desire realms in order, and the number of years of lifespan is known to be the same as the desire realms. Thus, the lifespan of the Four Great Kings is that one day and night of Samjiva is their five hundred years. The lifespan of Paranirmita-vasavartin (Controlling what is Created by Others) is one day and night of Tapa, and the number of years is the same as their number of years. The lifespan of Pratapa (Very Hot) is half an intermediate kalpa, and the lifespan of Avici (Uninterrupted) hell is one intermediate kalpa. Long-lived animals, such as nagas, can live for one intermediate kalpa. The sutra says: "Monks, these eight great nagas abide for a kalpa." Taking thirty human days as one day, five hundred years is the lifespan of the pretas (hungry ghosts). The Friendly Letter says: "Five thousand and ten thousand, also do not escape death." It is said like that. The lifespan of the cold hells is that from a cartload of sesame seeds, measured by the Magadha measure, holding eighty khals, one seed is taken out every hundred years until the seeds are exhausted, this is the lifespan of the Arbuda (Blister) hell, and the lower hells are considered to increase by twenty times compared to the previous ones. These are also as it is said: "If there is no pleasing sound, the lifespan is one thousand (years), in the second, half is abandoned. Here, the last is uncertain, the first ten years are immeasurable. People's lifespan is only fifty years, the gods of desire, the lower ones have one day and night, the upper two are doubled. Those with form have no day or night, the kalpa is measured by their own body. Those without form, a thousand kalpas, twenty thousand increase again and again. From Abhasvara onwards is a great kalpa, the one below it is half. Samjiva, etc.
