Endowed with, at night, a great Rakshasa woman completely devours the head, gradually experiencing endless suffering, but during the day, enjoys the bliss of the heavenly realm. Seeing this, he asked as before: At night, he is attached to being a thief, during the day, he is endowed with the virtues of discipline. The result of that action is both good and evil being experienced. Thus he spoke. Such and so forth. Second, explaining the realm of animals: The great abode of animals is the outer ocean, where the eight great Naga kings, namely: Delightful, Near Delightful, Giving, Giving Holding, Radiant, Great Black, Holder of the Realm, and Ela Leaf, also reside. They also reside in the seven pleasure-filled seas of the inner ocean. The scattered Nagas and animals are: They reside in all places such as the realms of gods and humans. Third, explaining the realm of the pretas: The abode of the pretas is five hundred yojanas below the royal palace of the central region, Rajagriha, where the palace of Yama, the King of Dharma, the king of the pretas, resides. He is one who experiences the wealth of the gods, possessing great magical powers, and for sentient beings, he accurately shows the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, thus benefiting beings, so it is said. The other beings belonging to the class of pretas who wander in the sky and on the earth are: They dwell without fixed abodes, each enjoying the results of their own actions, these are called the scattered ones. Second, explaining the higher realms (heavens), in three parts: The measure of the sun and moon, with their rising and setting, the desire gods and non-gods, the form realm and the formless realm. The first part is: How far do the sun and moon travel, and what is their measure? The sun and moon travel from the summit of the Half-Mountain, the Yoke-Holding Mountain, which is forty thousand yojanas from here. The measure of the moon is fifty yojanas in width, and the circumference is three times that. The son of the gods, the moon, resides there, made of the essence of water crystal. The reason why the moon appears to wax and wane is: When it is close to the sun, the light of the sun shines on the moon, and when its own shadow appears on the opposite side, the amount of the moon that appears to wane is the amount of the shadow. The closer it is to the sun, the larger the shadow becomes, like a lamp

Just as the shadow of a pillar is small when far away and large when near. When the sky is empty, the shadow completely obscures (the object), just like on the surface of butter, the farther the sun, the smaller the shadow, and it appears to increase. The size of the sun is fifty-one yojanas in width, and three times in circumference. Below it is made of fire crystal, and inside dwells the son of the sun. The way the sun operates in the continents is that in one day and night, here it is midnight, in the west it is sunset, in the north it is noon, and in the east it is sunrise, these times are the same, that is, when the sky and the sun are equal. These are also at half of Mount Meru. Fifty-one yojanas, midnight, sunset, noon, and sunrise are at the same time. Just as when the sun is near, it appears to be obscured by its own shadow. Secondly, on the first of the four levels of Mount Meru, dwell the yakshas holding jewel-bowls, on the second, dwell the yakshas holding flower garlands, on the third, dwell those who are always intoxicated with alcohol, and on the fourth, the gods of the Four Great Kings dwell in order. Moreover, the sun and moon, the stars, the seven golden mountains, and the mountains, waters, and trees of Jambudvipa also dwell the gods belonging to the Four Great Kings. Therefore, the scope of the divine race is very vast. In the hollow below the waterline of Mount Meru, dwell the cities of the Asuras (non-gods). The wealth of those Asuras is comparable to the glory of the Thirty-Three (Trāyastriṃśa). If asked which realm of beings those Asuras belong to, the answer is: mostly they belong to the preta (hungry ghost) and animal realms. This statement is incorrect because it has no reliable basis. Therefore, in summary, they are considered beings of the god realm. In the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta (Mindfulness Sutra), saying that these are animals is like scolding a stupid person as a cow, and it is not a correct statement. On the summit of Mount Meru dwell the gods of the Thirty-Three (Trāyastriṃśa). On the four sides of Mount Meru, there are four tiered mansions rising five hundred yojanas high, and dwelling there are the yakshas holding vajras (thunderbolts). In the center of the summit of Mount Meru is the city of the gods, called Sudarshana (Good to See), each side of which is two thousand five hundred yojanas long.
