Some beings exist in the great hell realm, which is called Avīci (无间地狱) because there is no break or interval in experiencing suffering. Its circumference and width are twenty thousand yojanas. Above Avīci, there are seven hot hells arranged in ascending order. Like this, when they strike each other with weapons and faint, falling to the ground, a voice arises saying, "May you be revived!" Then they stand up again and experience suffering as before, so it is called Sañjīva Below that, the hell guards mark the body with black lines, so it is called Kālasūtra The hell guards squeeze beings between iron mountains shaped like rams and the faces of sheep, destroying each other, so it is called Sanghāta Being confined in a doorless, burning iron chamber and uttering cries of distress, it is called Raurava Entering such a double iron chamber, it is called Mahāraurava Piercing from the buttocks with a burning iron skewer and piercing through the crown of the head, with flames erupting from the mouth, nose, etc., it is called Tapana (热地狱). Piercing with a three-pronged iron skewer, pulling it out from both shoulders and the head, with flames blazing from the pores of the mouth, nose, and hair, it is called Pratāpana All eight great hot hells have sixteen additional sufferings each. Like this, each of the four gates in their four directions has four additional sufferings. First, there is ash up to the knees, and the beings there raise and lower their feet, causing flesh to grow and decay. Beyond that, there is a forest of leaves like swords. Crossing that, there is a swamp of rotting corpses. When they sink into it, sharp-beaked insects inside pierce the beings' feet. Crossing that, there is a path filled with razors. Walking on it, raising and lowering their feet, flesh grows and decays. Beyond that, there is a forest of leaves like swords. When they stay there, leaves like swords fall, cutting off limbs and branches. Beyond that, there is a forest of iron silk-cotton trees with sharp thorns sixteen fingers long. When the beings climb up and down there, their bodies are torn apart, and iron-beaked crows peck at their eyes.

From where is it taken and eaten? These three are like weapons, hence they are one of the extras. Beyond that, there is a river of ashes filled with water that causes countless transformations. When those beings fall into it, there are people on both sides holding sticks and other things, guarding them and not letting them out. Those beings are surrounded by the Great Howling Hell, calling out. These become sixteen extras due to the differences in the four directions. First, harming beings in the Great Howling Hell, and then harming them here, hence it is called 'extra'. The second is: Directly opposite those hot hells are eight cold hells. Because of the cold, the body shrinks like a blister, hence it is called the Blister Hell. Escaping from there, shrinking like a blister bursting, it is called the Blister Bursting Hell. Threatened by the cold, the teeth chatter, and they say 'Achu' in their mouths, and they say 'Kyihud'. The color of the skin turns blue, splitting into five or six petals, splitting like a blue lotus. Fading from blue, the color of the skin turns red, splitting into eight or sixteen petals, splitting like a lotus. The skin becomes very red, splitting into a hundred petals or more, splitting greatly like a lotus. The ephemeral hells are located in places like the city of Rajagriha in Jambudvipa, as well as the seashore and the wilderness. As it appears in the story of the noble Gendun Sung and Groma Zhon Kye. The sutra says that the venerable Groma Zhon Kye lost his way on the seashore and wandered in the wilderness, gradually going forward. He saw a being enjoying the bliss of perfect enjoyment of gods and humans in an immeasurable palace at night. When dawn broke, the palace disappeared, and his body fell to the ground, being eaten by terrifying wild animals, experiencing immeasurable great suffering until the sun set. At night, he saw himself enjoying the wealth of the gods again. Groma Zhon Kye asked what caused this. He replied: 'During the day, I kill other beings, and at night, I possess the qualities of discipline. This is the good result of that action, and this is the experience of sin.' Then, gradually going forward, during the day, he enjoyed the wealth of the gods as before.
