That which is called "self-pride and self-attachment," wherever it arises, it is there. Touch and so on are also like that; an Arhat does not have these. In cessation samadhi, these are not present. In the path that transcends the world, these are not present. Thus it is said. Third, the six entering consciousnesses are: relying on the six faculties such as the eye as the primary condition, individually distinguishing one's own objects such as forms, these are the six aggregates of consciousness. Among these, eye consciousness is: relying on the eye faculty to recognize the nature of the object of form, up to mind consciousness which is: relying on the mind faculty to recognize the nature of the object of phenomena. Connect them in this way. If consciousness arises relying on the faculties, why is it that eye consciousness and so on are designated from the aspect of the faculties, and not from the aspect of objects such as forms? The faculties are the unique cause of consciousness, because the faculties of each individual cause their own consciousness to arise, but do not cause the consciousness of others. Objects are not like that; they are not the unique cause of consciousness, because one object can commonly cause the consciousness of many beings to arise. Designating from the aspect of the unique cause is for the sake of easy understanding. For example, the sprout that grows relying on seeds, earth, water, and so on, is called a barley sprout, designated by the unique seed, so that what is intended is clearly understood, and it is not called an earth or water sprout. Therefore, the six entering consciousnesses are produced by the unique cause, the faculties such as the eye, so they are called faculty consciousnesses, and not object consciousnesses, because the meaning that is intended cannot be clearly understood. Second, explaining the realms, there are two parts: First, a brief explanation: Realms are established by holding onto the objects of experience. Holding onto the six consciousnesses of experience from the perspective of their location are the six sense-faculties realms, such as the eye; holding onto them from the perspective of their objects are the six object-realms, such as forms; holding onto them by their own characteristics are defined as the six aggregates of consciousness. Therefore, the realms are considered to be eighteen. Among these, the eye-realm is twofold: manifest and seed.

Firstly, it refers to the sense faculty of the eyes, both past and present, because they have already grasped and are currently grasping the object of eye consciousness. Secondly, it refers to the seeds of the eye that exist in the Alaya consciousness, and the ripened aspect of the Alaya consciousness that currently appears as the eye faculty. These are the causes of the eye, and therefore are called the eye element. Similarly, for the remaining four sense faculties, the six consciousness elements, and the five objects such as form, it should be understood that each of them is an element through the two aspects of manifestation and seed. Secondly, the detailed explanation is divided into two parts. First, the explanation of the mind element. Are not the six aggregates of consciousness already explained as the consciousness element? Then, what is the mind element other than these? There is no mind element other than these. However, the consciousness of these six acting consciousnesses themselves, at the moment of cessation, is the very support for the subsequent mind consciousness, and therefore it is the mind element. In this way, since the six consciousness elements are included in the mind element, will it not become eighteen elements? For the five consciousnesses, the sense faculties such as the eyes are the support. Since mind consciousness has no other support, therefore, in order to firmly establish the support of the sixth mind consciousness, the mind element is separated from the six consciousness elements, and therefore it is considered to be eighteen elements. Secondly, regarding the dharma element, it is divided into a general explanation and a specific explanation that is difficult to understand. First, the three aggregates of feeling, etc., mentioned above, non-form and the unconditioned, because they are the door through which mind consciousness arises from the object, they are the dharma source, and because they grasp the object of mind consciousness from the door of the object, they are called the dharma element. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha, "Those three non-forms and the unconditioned are called the dharma source and the dharma element." The second part is divided into two parts to explain: non-form and the unconditioned. First, regarding non-form, its definition is, as the Abhidharmakosha says, "distraction," etc., which refers to arising in all states of mind being distracted and not distracted, and with and without mind, caused by spontaneous motivation, and whose essence is virtuous or non-virtuous.
