If one focuses on the Alaya consciousness, because of the Alaya consciousness's nature of karmic fruition, this consciousness arises with the aspect of self, therefore, it is said to focus on it, but it is not to focus on the Alaya consciousness's own nature. Because the Alaya consciousness, before attaining the ground, cannot truly realize its own nature as it is. This consciousness has nine companions, namely the five omnipresent mental factors, as well as the view of self, attachment to self, pride of self, and ignorance of self. The feeling is neutral, and the nature is obscured and indeterminate. Because the four afflictive companions make it turbid, and it arises together with virtuous, non-virtuous, and so on. This consciousness is the basis for the clinging to self, therefore it is the root of samsara. The mental consciousness is the cause of generating the aspect of apprehending the characteristics of phenomena and persons, because it is the dominant condition that exists together with the consciousness. Second, the time of arising and ceasing: This consciousness is not present in the cessation attainment, because the cessation attainment is superior to the non-conceptual attainment due to the cessation of the afflicted mind. It is also not present when abiding in the supramundane path, because it is contradictory to arise together with the view of self, due to the antidote to the view of self. Those are the times of temporary cessation, that is, immediately after rising from the noble path and meditative absorption, it arises again from the habitual tendencies of the view of self that exists in the Alaya consciousness. It does not arise after the attainment of Arhatship from the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and after the attainment of the eighth ground by the Mahayanists, because in those states the view of self has been abandoned. This is the time of ultimate cessation. Except for those three states, at all times it arises quickly without error. Even when abiding in the noble path, because the four corresponding afflictions have ceased, it is said that the afflicted mind has ceased, but it is not the cessation of the substance of the mind, because if it were, it would lead to the impossibility of the mind and the undefiled consciousness arising together. Therefore, as long as it exists in correspondence with those four afflictions, then it is both mind and afflicted. When it does not correspond with the four corresponding afflictions, it is mind.

Because it is the place where uncontaminated and pure consciousnesses arise together, it is not an afflicted mind. When the four corresponding afflictions have subsided, since there is no characteristic of an afflicted mind, it is not the so-called cessation of the afflicted mind, but the cessation of the substance of the mind. When the mind itself is free from all faults and abides in the non-dual essence of its own nature, at that time the mind is transformed, and the name of equality wisdom is obtained. In this regard, ordinary people are completely afflicted. Hearers and solitary realizers who are students, when they have not settled on the path, are completely afflicted. When they have settled on the path, because they are obscured and unspecified, they are not afflicted, but merely mind. The state of non-learning is also the same as this, but in nirvana without remainder, the continuum is cut off. When the noble one of loving-kindness settles on the path, it is the transformed, uncontaminated mind. When arising from the path, below the seventh ground, it still arises in conjunction with the four afflictions, so it is completely afflicted. Above the eighth ground, it does not arise in conjunction with the four afflictions, so it is not afflicted, but because it operates together with subtle bewilderment and imputation of phenomena, it is neither purely virtuous nor uncontaminated, so it is called the obscured and unspecified mind. In the aftermath of the vajra-like samadhi, because it is free from all signs of imputation of self and phenomena, it manifests as faultless, self-nature pure, and luminous, so it is called equality wisdom, and as long as samsara is not empty, it continuously and naturally operates. Therefore, the minds of hearers, solitary realizers, and those who abide on the irreversible ground are not transformed because they are the place of arising of the moment of consciousness arising with imputation of phenomena, and therefore they do not obtain the name of equality wisdom. A brief determination of the afflicted mind: In the Thirty Verses it says: 'Abiding in that, extremely arising, that which is objectified is called mind, consciousness, self-nature possessing, obscured and unspecified nature, always together with afflictions, view of self and delusion of self.'
