Coming and not coming now, blue and yellow, etc., are differences in the meaning of form. Regarding this, when eye consciousness sees the form of a vase, it thinks, "This is form," and only by the aspect of form, the power of eye consciousness can bring about certainty. Therefore, it is established that eye consciousness only recognizes the essence of the meaning of form. Regarding the differences such as "This is the form of a vase," "This is yellow," "This is blue," etc., the feelings and perceptions of the eye consciousness and its retinue can bring about certainty. Therefore, it is established as recognizing the differences in the meaning of mental factors. As it is said, in the *Madhyāntavibhāga* (Middle Extremes), "Here, seeing meaning is consciousness; its difference arises from mind." Regarding the way of recognizing the essence and differences in the meaning of mind and mental factors, the ancient teachers made many expositions, but most of them did not become widespread, and nowadays no one pays attention to them. Therefore, I have written about them in detail in the commentary on the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* (Compendium of Abhidharma), so please refer to it there. If this consciousness is classified, there are eight consciousnesses: the ālaya-vijñāna (store consciousness), the kliṣṭa-manas (afflicted mind), and the six consciousnesses. Secondly, the detailed explanation is divided into three: the ālaya-vijñāna, the kliṣṭa-manas, and the six entering consciousnesses. The first part has three: its characteristics and divisions, and the scriptural authority that makes it known. The first part also has three, the first being the main text: Among the eight consciousnesses that exist, the characteristic of the ālaya-vijñāna is: the vipāka-vijñāna (resultant consciousness) is associated with all of all pervasively afflicted dharmas. Its names are also called ālaya-vijñāna because it is the basis of all of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa. Because it is the nature of the complete maturation of the predispositions of previously accumulated karma, it is also called vipāka-vijñāna. Because it is the continuum that causes the body that has not been obtained to be obtained, and the body that has been obtained to abide, it is also called ādāna-vijñāna (appropriating consciousness). Because it is the place of the three natures of knowable objects, it is also called the place of knowable objects. If asked, what are the object and aspect of this consciousness like? In the form realm, there are two objects of this consciousness: the aspect of internal appropriation and the aspect of the external vessel. The first is the predispositions that are imputed as grasper and grasped, and the place

Our colored sense faculties are of two kinds, the first of which is: because it takes the form of the senses and their objects, it is called 'taking'. The second is: because it is to be taken, it is 'taking'. The aspect-consciousness of the outer vessel is: these appearances of mountains, houses, dwellings, etc., collected by the senses in the external environment. Why are these three the objects of the alaya-consciousness? Because from the cause and condition of the habit of conceptual imputation, the ripening consciousness arises, manifesting the senses such as the eyes belonging to oneself and others, and the aspect of the outer vessel such as mountains, houses, and dwellings. Therefore, the habit of clinging to conceptual imputation is the object that generates the ripening consciousness appearing as object and mind, and therefore it is established as its object. For example, the Sautrantikas, although objects such as form and sound do not directly appear to the senses, they generate the grasping aspect of those consciousnesses, so they are established as their objects. The colored sense faculties together with their support, and the outer vessels, are the objects to be grasped by the ripening consciousness, and therefore they are established as objects. In the formless realm, only the habit of conceptual imputation is the object, because from the cause and condition of the habit of conceptual imputation, and from the condition of the lord of unwavering karma accomplished by the samadhi of infinite space, etc., the four ripening consciousnesses born in the formless realm, the first two are objects of immeasurable grasp, and the latter two are objects of subtle and extremely subtle grasp. How do they enter into these objects? Answer: For as long as life lasts, they enter in a very unclear, continuous, and uniform manner. Why is it so unclear? Because just as the object of eye consciousness is form, the object of this cannot be completely determined by the power of experience as 'what is this'. Why does it continuously enter with the same taste? Because in the first moment of rebirth in the place of birth, whatever the object and aspect are, it enters in exactly that state for as long as life lasts.
