It is the animal realm. As it is said: Attachment leads to the realm of the hungry ghosts, hatred throws one into hell, and ignorance mostly leads to the animal realm. Furthermore, the great non-virtuous deeds mentioned above cause one to fall into hell, the medium ones cause one to fall into the hungry ghosts, and the small ones cause one to fall into the animal realm. Second, in the result that is concordant with the cause, there are two types: the experienced concordant with the cause and the action concordant with the cause. The first is that even if one has already been born as a human, many undesirable things such as a short life will occur. In the Garland of Jewels it says: Killing causes a short life, extreme harm causes much harm, stealing causes a lack of wealth, adultery causes many enemies, lying causes much slander, divisive speech separates friends, harsh speech causes unpleasantness to be heard, idle talk causes words to be disrespectful, greed destroys hope in the mind, harmful intent gives fear, wrong view is evil view itself, drinking alcohol confuses the mind, not giving causes poverty, wrong view causes stupidity, pride causes a bad lineage, jealousy causes a lack of dignity, anger causes an ugly complexion, not asking the wise causes foolishness, this result in human form is the first of all bad destinies. So it is said. The action concordant with the cause is to be delighted in doing the deeds of killing and so on. Third, the dominant result is to be born in a bad place where the land is salty, the grass, trees, and crops do not ripen in time, and the ends of activities such as farming and business do not succeed as intended. Second, the result of virtuous deeds is the opposite of the ripening, concordant, and dominant results of non-virtuous deeds, and one will experience it in the abodes of gods and humans in the happy realms. As it is said in the Garland of Jewels: Whatever ripening has been proclaimed of those called non-virtuous, for all virtuous things, that result arises in reverse. So it is said. The ten paths of virtuous action, gathered by the vows of individual liberation, and gathered by intermediate virtue, are called deeds of merit. The ripening of these will result in obtaining the wealth of gods and humans in the desire realm. As it says in the Garland of Jewels: One should turn away from all non-virtue, and always engage in virtue.

This explains two kinds of Dharma. This Dharma liberates from hell, hungry ghosts, and animals, and in the realms of gods and humans, may happiness, prosperity, and royal power increase. Thus it is said. The previously mentioned vows of meditative absorption, the samadhi that achieves it, and the formless attainments are called unwavering actions. Their ripening is to experience the bliss of samadhi in the upper two realms. It is said: Through immeasurable meditation and formless absorption, one experiences the bliss of Brahma and others. Thus it is explained. Thus, this Dharma of higher realms is also a summary of its fruits. Thus it is said. These previously mentioned contaminated virtues with their fruits are the classifications of the Dharma of higher realms with its fruits. The Dharma of definite goodness will be explained below. Therefore, having clearly understood the merits and faults of the law of cause and effect, do not despise even small virtues and sins, abandon even subtle evils, and cultivate even subtle virtues. This makes leisure and opportunity meaningful. Even if one does not have the ability to abandon all evils and cultivate all virtues, if one properly adopts and abandons even a few of the virtues and sins mentioned above, compared to sentient beings born in unfavorable circumstances, it is still making leisure and opportunity meaningful. This is because they are confused about the relationship of cause and effect, indulging in evil deeds and not even having the opportunity to cultivate a single virtue. The Letter to a Friend says: What is this advice given to you? Even a learned monk finds it difficult to do. Whatever aspect of practice comes from this, show it with merit, and make your life meaningful. Thus it is said. Fourth, contemplating the faults of samsara. The reason for contemplating the faults of samsara, and the first content of contemplating the faults themselves, is: Leisure and opportunity are difficult to obtain, knowing that death is impermanent, abandoning sins, and cultivating virtues, even if one only obtains the happiness of gods and humans, this is not a place that the wise can trust. Because the wise see even the heavenly realms as unpleasant like the abode of animals, and as a place of suffering like hell. Thus it is also said in the sutra: Monks, I am impure.
