Extensive Guide to Madhyamaka Extensive Guide to Madhyamaka Herein lies the Extensive Stages of Meditation. (Extensive Guide to Madhyamaka) Homage to the Three Jewels! For beginners, the essential instructions for practice are summarized into three parts: preliminary practices, main practice, and concluding practices. First, the preliminary practices are divided into two types: common and uncommon. The common preliminary practices include contemplating the difficulty of finding leisure and fortune, impermanence of death, the law of karma, and the faults of samsara. First, leisure and fortune are further divided into the definition of leisure and fortune and the reasons for their difficulty to obtain. Leisure refers to abandoning the eight states of unfreedom that lack the opportunity to practice Dharma, and fortune refers to possessing the ten endowments of self and others, which are conducive conditions. The eight states of unfreedom are: the three lower realms, the land of the Uttarakuru where sound is unpleasant, border regions where the Buddha's teachings are not heard, foolishness where one does not know what to accept and reject, muteness where one cannot speak (if those holding wrong views are included, then foolishness and muteness can be counted as one). Also, long-lived gods born as unconscious beings. These are not suitable vessels for practicing the Dharma of higher realms and definite goodness, so they are called unfreedom. The ten endowments are divided into five personal endowments and five other endowments. The first are: being born in a place where the teachings exist, having become a human, having complete five senses, not having committed the five heinous crimes so that the end of karma is not reversed, and having faith in the teachings. The five other endowments are: the Buddha's appearance in the world, the teaching of the sacred Dharma, the existence of the teachings, the existence of practitioners who are in accordance with the Dharma, and the existence of loving-kindness towards others. Such leisure and fortune are difficult to obtain for three reasons: it is difficult to obtain in terms of number, in terms of cause, and in terms of quality. First, not to mention obtaining a special human body endowed with the qualities of leisure and fortune, even obtaining an ordinary human body is less than the stars in the daytime compared to the sentient beings of the three lower realms. Compared to the creatures in a summer pond, the people of Jambudvipa are much fewer. Therefore, it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Like a yoke-hole in the ocean, and a blind turtle meeting it is rare.

Moreover, compared to the animal realm, obtaining a human body is extremely difficult. Therefore, as a lord of humans, one should practice the sacred Dharma and thereby attain the corresponding fruit. Thus it is said. Obtaining a human body with leisure and endowments is even more exceedingly rare, because the appearance of a Buddha in the world is as rare as the udumbara flower. Without the appearance of a Buddha, the teachings will not arise; without the teachings, it is impossible to obtain leisure and endowments. Therefore, the sutra says: The appearance of a Buddha is difficult to find, and leisure and endowments are difficult to find. Therefore, compared to sentient beings in the lower realms, merely obtaining a human body is very rare. Since it is known that obtaining a human body with leisure and endowments is even rarer than merely obtaining a human body, one should, like a poor person finding a jewel, think again and again that this one-time attainment of leisure and endowments must not be wasted. Secondly, from the perspective of the cause, obtaining a human body requires a special virtuous cause. The arising of virtuous thoughts in the world is like lightning flashing in the dark night, only an occasional manifestation of the Buddha's activity. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: Just as in a dark, cloudy night, a flash of lightning briefly illuminates everything, so too, by the power of the Buddha, in the course of a hundred paths, there is an occasional occurrence of merit and wisdom in the world. Therefore, consider virtue to be very weak. Thus it is said. Among virtuous deeds, it is through guarding moral discipline, abandoning non-virtue, that one obtains a human body, and not through generosity or any other virtuous deed. And guarding moral discipline is also extremely difficult. The sutra says: Generosity is practiced by butchers and those of low birth, anyone can give, but it is not possible for anyone to guard moral discipline. Thus it is said. Therefore, if even the cause for merely obtaining a human body is very rare, what need is there to mention the rarity of the cause for obtaining leisure and endowments with the qualities described above? Therefore, one should repeatedly contemplate that from the perspective of the cause, obtaining this leisure and endowment is extremely difficult. Not only is it difficult to obtain leisure and endowments from the perspective of number and cause, but it is also extremely difficult to obtain from the perspective of qualities, because liberation from the ocean of suffering of samsara must rely on the human body.
