How does one grasp at self? For example, based on seeing the color of a rope, one assumes, "This is a snake." Without seeing it, the thought of grasping at a snake does not arise. Similarly, without grasping at the aggregates such as form in one's own continuum, the innate view of self, thinking "I," does not arise. Through grasping at the aggregates such as form of other beings, due to the power of habituation from beginningless time, the innate view of self, thinking "I," arises. The aggregates are not its object, nor is anything other than the aggregates its object, and without the aggregates, the view of self does not arise. Therefore, it is based on the aggregates that self is designated. If the aggregates and that itself, and anything else, are not established, then how can it be established as existing? If one thinks that things have no other form, then, if one accepts that self is a substantially existent thing, that would be true, but this is without rational analysis, merely due to the power of ignorance, it is established as existing separately, and is established as dependently arising and conventionally. As it is said, in the Entering the Middle Way: 'Wherever there is a view of self, there is a grasping at 'mine,' and the thought of 'belonging to me' arises there. This self, without investigation, is conventionally said to be 'I' due to ignorance.' How is it so? Is it a conventional truth and conventionally existent? Establishing conventional truth is through direct perception, inference, and approximation, as well as scripture, that is, through the four conventional valid cognitions. The innate self is also because its object, the innate view of self, is established by conventional direct valid cognition. How does the innate view of self become direct valid cognition? Because it engages in the manner of manifesting meaning, and its object is not harmed by other conventional valid cognitions, therefore it is not deceptive. If it does not become direct valid cognition merely by that much, then when the eye sees the shape of a pot, the thought of "It is a pot" will also not become direct perception, because it has the same characteristics as the former. This view is also unreasonable. In the Four Hundred Stanzas, it says: 'When seeing form, one does not see, everything is only the matter of the pot, saying the pot is direct perception, who says that is consciousness?', this is in name.

The eye consciousness that grasps the shape of a vase, and the subsequent mind that thinks "it is a vase," both are manifest to the object, the vase. Although it is said so in the world, the scholars of the Mind-Only school do not accept these as manifest, because they believe that one cannot see everything by seeing only one aspect. This is because it contradicts what was said above. The second reasoning to refute it is: In this way, the co-emergent self is imputed in dependence on the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Because it is dependent arising, it has no inherent existence. Just as a chariot is designated as a chariot in dependence on its parts such as wheels, axles, spokes, etc. As it is also said in the sutra: "Just as relying on the collection of limbs, it is designated as a chariot, similarly, relying on the aggregates, it is conventionally called a sentient being." The Entering the Middle Way also says: "Therefore, this reasoning of dependent arising cuts through all nets of wrong views." Therefore, this reasoning of dependent arising can eliminate all views of self that cling to the extremes of existence or non-existence of self. Fourth, how to settle the mind on selflessness: As the reasons mentioned above, it can be determined that the imputed self does not exist even conventionally. Although the co-emergent self exists only as an imputation in name, the wisdom that understands that it has no inherent existence in reality is the view of understanding selflessness. And that, relying on calm abiding, repeatedly familiarizing oneself with it, until the clarity of the object of meditation reaches its peak, is the direct realization of selflessness. Therefore, one can temporarily abandon the imputed and co-emergent views of self, but one cannot uproot the seeds of the view of self, because one has not realized that the basis of delusion of the view of self, the aggregates, are without inherent existence. As it is also said in the Precious Garland: "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be self-grasping towards them." The ultimate reality is emptiness, realizing that the aggregates are without inherent existence. If one realizes the selflessness of persons, if one does not realize it, how to establish the selflessness of persons? Although one does not directly realize the ultimate reality, because the self depends on dependent arising, although it exists conventionally, it is like having no inherent existence, dharma
