All things are due to the habits accumulated since beginningless time, and naturally arise the discriminating thoughts that grasp at "I" and "mine." Second, it is to contemplate the object of innate ego-grasping, and relying on what appears to be scriptural teachings, to grasp the five aggregates as one or different, as identical or other. The "self" that becomes the object of these is also of two types: the innate self and the imputed self. What reason aims to refute is both of these, because it is necessary to prevent the innate self by refuting the imputed self. Thus, if the innate self is established as truly existent, then it must, as conceived by self and other schools, be established as any one of the five aggregates, or as identical, or as other, etc. If it is thought that the view of self and the grasping of sentient beings are different categories, then it is unreasonable, because one would not grasp at the sentient beings of other continuums as "I" and "mine." Because one grasps at the self and "mine" that are included in other continuums. Therefore, the self and sentient beings, etc., of one's own continuum are the objects of the view of self of one's own continuum, while the self and sentient beings, etc., of other continuums are not the objects of one's own view of self, but are the objects of other minds. Second, as it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Therefore, those who desire liberation should uproot from its very base the view of the transitory collection, which arises from the seed of the same kind, which has a beginningless cause." And as it is said in the Introduction to the Middle Way: "Since all faults of disturbing emotions arise from the view of the transitory collection, the scriptures say that this is the 'self,' which yogis should refute." Thus, the causes of being born in samsara are actions and disturbing emotions, and disturbing emotions, etc., arise from the view of the transitory collection. Therefore, those who desire liberation must first abandon the view of self, and it is abandoned by way of preventing its object, the "self." As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "If this object is not refuted, it is not possible to eliminate this view." Thus it is taught. Third, of the two, refuting the imputed self and refuting the innate self, the first is: In the sutras of our own school, the Sautrantikas, it is said: "Whatever monk or brahmin truly follows after the self or what belongs to the self, it is in these five aggregates of appropriation." Some, thinking that they understand the secret meaning of this sutra, think that all five aggregates are the self,
