There is also the opportunity to meditate on vipassanā. If one seeks transcendent vipassanā, then one has the opportunity to observe the reality of things as they are. The signs of obtaining attention are: After listening, the signs of the place of attention for the beginner are these: he obtains a small mind that acts in form, the body is very supple, the mind is very supple, he obtains a small one-pointedness of mind, he has the opportunity and ability to practice the objects of affliction, his mind stream becomes gentle, and he is entangled by calm abiding. Thus, dwelling in that, when focusing the mind, the mind and body quickly become very supple, the unfavorable conditions of the body will not cause great harm, and most of the obscurations will not run around. Thus, when getting up and walking, one will also have some physical and mental suppleness. Those who have such qualities should know that the sign of having attention is that the characteristics are completely purified. So it is said. The Ornament Sutra also says: After that, his body and mind, after obtaining great suppleness, are called having attention. So it is said. If, without the signs of direct perception as mentioned above, one obtains one-pointedness of mind that spontaneously arises from the object, this is one-pointedness of desire that is in accordance with calm abiding, not calm abiding. The Explanation of Intention Sutra says: World Honored One, when the Bodhisattva is like this, when the mind is focused on the mind and attention is paid inwardly, what should this attention be called in between not obtaining very supple body and very supple mind? Maitreya, it is not calm abiding, it should be said to be in accordance with the aspiration that is in accordance with calm abiding. This is clearly stated. If such one-pointedness has the bliss of very supple body and mind, how does it become the proximity attainment of the first dhyana? Because the proximity attainment of the first dhyana is said to be neutral feeling. If one obtains calm abiding for the first time, by the power of suppleness, the body

It is merely the appearance of a coarse joy in the mind. After that, gradually, the bliss of pliancy becomes extremely subtle, and the feeling abides in a state of equanimity. As it is said in the scriptures, when it first arises, the mind is filled with joy, extreme delight, and supreme happiness, and even the object and manifest joy may appear. After that, the initial force of pliancy gradually becomes very subtle, and the body becomes endowed with a pliancy like a shadow. The joy in the mind is also abandoned, and the mind draws near to and becomes stable in calm abiding, entering the object in a completely peaceful manner. The method of training in calm abiding has been explained. Second, regarding the method of training in insight meditation, there are four points: the time for meditating on insight, its distinctions, the method of meditation, and the measure of insight arising from meditation. The first point is: Should one meditate only on the calm abiding with the characteristics described earlier? Generating such calm abiding is for the purpose of generating insight meditation, which is the activity of destroying afflictions. If one does not generate insight meditation based on it, no matter how much calm abiding one meditates on, one will not be able to abandon the afflictions of desire, let alone abandon all afflictions. Therefore, having attained calm abiding, one should rely on it to meditate on insight meditation, which discerns the reality of things. Second, the distinctions of insight meditation: From the perspective of what is to be abandoned, there are two types of insight meditation: one is insight meditation that temporarily abandons manifest afflictions and proceeds through the worldly path; the other is insight meditation that abandons the seeds of afflictions from the root and proceeds through the path beyond the world. The scriptures say: "For a yogi who has thus attained mindfulness, there is nothing else to advance beyond entering into the small joy of abandonment; there are only two. Which two? Worldly and beyond worldly." Worldly refers to looking at peace from the perspective of faults such as short life, even though there are many afflictions in the lower realms such as the desire realm. There are six sets of six mental activities included in the nine proximity grounds, that is

These should be understood in other treatises; I will not elaborate here. Supramundane vipassanā refers to the wisdom that separately realizes the absence of self of persons and the absence of self of phenomena, which will be explained later. Dividing from the perspective of the object, there are two types: one is to differentiate all phenomena, and the other is to thoroughly differentiate the nature of phenomena. Each of these is further divided into two: roughly and completely understanding the generalities, and finely differentiating and thoroughly analyzing. As it is said, what are the four types of vipassanā that arise from listening? That is, a bhikṣu relies on the tranquility of the inner mind, thereby differentiating phenomena, thoroughly differentiating, completely understanding, and completely practicing. Dividing from the perspective of cause, there are those arising from listening, those arising from thinking, and those arising from meditation. The first is to differentiate all and such phenomena by relying on the sounds of others. The second is to differentiate all and such phenomena through the four reasonings. The third is to differentiate by relying on tranquility, in the manner of repeatedly meditating on the meaning determined by listening and thinking. These wisdoms before the signs of vipassanā meditation, which will be explained below, arise, are mental activities that are in accordance with vipassanā, but are not actual vipassanā. Third, there are two ways to practice vipassanā: the way to practice the absence of self of persons and the way to practice the absence of self of phenomena. First, there are five points: the nature of the self to be refuted, the reason for refuting it, the reasoning that refutes it, the method of abiding in the absence of self, and the scriptural proof as evidence. First, the object is person, self, sentient being, and puruṣa, which are synonyms. The subject is the view of self, the view of the perishable collection, the clinging to self, and the clinging to sentient beings, which are synonyms. The view of the perishable collection is of two types: innate and imputed. The first is as stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Whether it is happiness or suffering, if one believes there is a single, unchanging entity, then the thought that arises, 'I am,' is the innate view of sentient beings." As it is said, sentient beings
