When the mind becomes agitated, it is because of perceiving attachment. It is abandoned by contemplating impermanence and ugliness, thus bringing the signs of renunciation to mind. When the mind wanders to other objects, it is distraction, which is abandoned by remembering the qualities of samadhi and the faults of mental wandering. If, during practice, the object is not clear because mindfulness is weak, and the mind becomes dull, this is sinking. Therefore, generate strong mindfulness that clarifies the object, uplift the mind, and make it energetic to abandon it. Do not forget even when the object is merely unclear; when the mind becomes dull, it is drowsiness, which can be abandoned by contemplating light, such as lamps and jewels, and by contemplating joyful objects, such as the forms of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Furthermore, the nature of agitation and sinking can also be abandoned by examining them with discriminating wisdom. As explained above, when a yogi practices, these methods of employing mindfulness and awareness are crucial for all samadhi practices, including the two stages of Vajrayana practice. The duration of a session: For beginners, if a session is too long, practice will become tiring. Therefore, practice short sessions with many repetitions. When the mindfulness that grasps the object and the awareness that detects agitation and sinking become powerful, when the mind naturally enters the object through intentional effort, one can practice sessions with a fixed duration, such as one "fire-breath" or half a session. When agitation and sinking are dispelled, and the mind effortlessly and naturally abides on the object, one can practice without a fixed duration, as one desires. Therefore, in authoritative treatises such as the Abhidharma, it is taught to practice contemplating ugliness for those with attachment, loving-kindness for those with hatred, dependent origination for those with ignorance, the differentiation of elements for those with pride, and to focus on breathing in and out for those with excessive conceptual thought. And in these tantras, it is taught to practice the two-stage yoga by focusing on the deity's form, bindu, mudra, and so on. Therefore, even when practicing samadhi, there must be a single
