Therefore, one should understand well the ways of abiding and let its image appear in the mind. That is, starting from the crown of the head, to the appearance of the face, the hands in the meditation mudra and earth-touching mudra, and the legs in the lotus posture, all should be clearly visualized. Then, focus the mind on the overall form of the body. By practicing repeatedly in this way, the colors and shapes of the head, hands, and feet, etc., will not be confused. If one can achieve about half of this, then continuously focus on it. At this time, there are four faults: from the color, shape, number, and size of the fundamental object of focus, if other images such as colors appear, this is a fault. Therefore, one should remember the color, etc., of the object of focus as it is in the mind, and thus concentrate. Also, if other distractions such as smoke appear that have not been cultivated, do not regard them as good or bad, and do not let the mind wander after them, but focus on the fundamental object of focus itself. Second, the object of focus through which clarity is obtained by cultivation: As mentioned above, by repeatedly practicing on the above-mentioned object of focus, and gaining some power of samadhi, when the color and shape, etc., of the object of focus appear in the mind like a direct perception, it is also called the image of samadhi, and also called the sign and object of focus of calm abiding. It is only similar to calm abiding, but it is not true calm abiding. Fourth, how to place the mind: Generally speaking, from the great treatises, the eight practices of abandoning and the nine methods of abiding the mind, etc., are all parts of samadhi. But here, for beginners, the indispensable parts for cultivating samadhi are mindfulness and awareness. Mindfulness first causes the mind to abide on the object of focus, and prevents it from continuously scattering to other places; awareness can identify the faults of samadhi in the middle, namely agitation and sinking, and eliminate them. Therefore, the commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras says: Mindfulness and awareness are what bring the mind near, one prevents the mind from scattering from the object of focus, and the other knows whether the mind is scattered. So it is said. The Essence of the Middle Way also says: If the elephant of the mind goes astray.

It is said, "With the pillar of steadfast focus, bind it firmly with the rope of mindfulness, and gradually subdue it with the whip of wisdom." Here, wisdom is awareness. The way mindfulness directs the mind to the object is: by causing the appearance of the object of focus that was previously seen, without allowing the mind to wander elsewhere, but holding the mind firmly on that object itself. As it is said in the Compendium of Abhidharma, "What is mindfulness? It is the non-forgetting of familiar objects, having the function of non-distraction." Therefore, mindfulness is explained as the function of the mind not wandering from the object. Therefore, when meditating on samadhi, if there is no mindfulness directing the mind to the object, then either the mind will sink inward and the object will become unclear, or it will scatter outward and the mind will become distracted. Therefore, when meditating, it is important to continuously generate strong mindfulness that does not forget the object of samadhi. If mindfulness weakens in the meantime and the mind becomes dull and distracted, then awareness that recognizes this is very important. And awareness is the wisdom (of recognizing) the faults and merits of samadhi, the one-pointed mind free from sinking and agitation is faultless samadhi, the sinking in which the mind is drawn inward and the object of samadhi is unclear, and the drowsiness in which the object is unclear as if intoxicated by sleep, and the dullness in which the mind becomes confused, and the scattering in which the mind goes from the object to other objects, these are the faults of samadhi. When meditating with awareness, in order to recognize these, at the beginning of entering meditation, one must first generate a strong intention that sinking and agitation should not arise until this session of my samadhi meditation is completed, merely knowing the faults and merits of sinking and agitation makes it difficult to recognize these during meditation. If such an intention is generated beforehand, then sinking and agitation will be recognized immediately as soon as they arise, and in the meantime, one should also frequently examine: Is my mind well-held on the object, or is it scattered outward, or drawn inward? When examining in this way, if sinking and agitation have arisen, how should they be abandoned? That is, remember the forms, sounds, etc. that were previously seen, which become objects of the mind.
