Its conduct has five merits: quickly generating physical pliancy; being able to abide for a long time; the body does not become tired; it is not common with non-Buddhists and external disputants; others seeing this conduct of abiding generate great joy; and this conduct is approved by the Buddha and Śrāvakas. Second, there are five points to explaining the order of cultivation: the reason why both Śamatha and Vipaśyanā must be cultivated; the certainty of the order of cultivation; identifying the object on which the mind is placed; how to place the mind on it; and the measure of Śamatha arising from that placement. The first point is: for example, in water that is very clear and not moved by the wind, the reflection of a mirror and other things can be clearly seen; if the water is clear but moved by the wind, or if it is not clear, it is not like that. Similarly, a yogi who is not disturbed by the faults of sinking and excitement, who has one-pointed Samādhi, and who has clear wisdom that can cut through superimpositions on reality, will clearly see reality. If one does not have any of these, it is not so. Merely being accustomed to Śamatha without wisdom only temporarily suppresses afflictions and cannot completely destroy latent tendencies, because there is no light of wisdom. As it is also said in the *Samādhirāja Sūtra*: Though meditation is practiced, it does not destroy the belief in self. Its afflictions are stirred up again and again. Like that, meditation should be eliminated. If one discerns self and other separately in the Dharma, and having separately examined, if one then meditates, that itself is the cause of attaining Nirvāṇa. What other cause can pacify? So it is said. It is also not sufficient to have only wisdom without Śamatha, just as a lamp moved by the wind at night cannot clearly illuminate objects. Similarly, wisdom disturbed by conceptual thoughts cannot clearly see reality. Therefore, both must be cultivated. As it says in the *Friendly Letter*: Without meditation, there is no wisdom, and without wisdom, there is no meditation.

permanently absent. Where do those two exist? One should seek existence as if searching for a footprint in a black sea. Thus it is said. Second, determining the order of meditation: First, one should meditate on calm abiding (śamatha), because one relies on calm abiding to meditate on insight (vipaśyanā). As it is said: "Having known that insight, which is fully endowed with calm abiding, completely destroys the afflictions, one should first seek calm abiding." And also from the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: "Having achieved calm abiding, one should meditate on mindfulness." Thus it is said. Third, identifying the object to which the mind is directed: First, the object for holding the mind and the object for obtaining clarity in meditation, the first of the two is: In general, there are many explanations for the object of holding the mind, so there is no certainty, but holding the mind on the body of the Buddha has necessities such as remembering the Buddha and increasing merit, and there is also the necessity of accomplishing samādhi, so one should take the body of the Tathāgata as the object. What is it like? As it says in the Final Stages of Meditation: "There, the yogi should first practice calm abiding by placing the mind on how the body of the Tathāgata is seen and how it is heard. That body of the Tathāgata is yellow like the color of pure gold, adorned with excellent marks and signs, dwelling among the retinue, and constantly thinking of accomplishing the meaning of sentient beings by various means. Generate desire for its qualities and pacify sinking and excitement, etc., and meditate as long as it clearly appears as if it is dwelling in front of you. " And also from the King of Samādhi Sūtra: "The body like the color of gold, the protector of the world is always pleasing everywhere, whoever places the mind on that object, that bodhisattva is called equipoise." Like that, take it as the object of focus. That is, first search for the object of focus, and repeatedly look at a good statue or painting of the Buddha, remember its marks and signs, and get used to having its image appear in the mind, or by the lama
