Therefore, like a single day, dedicate everything of the three times entirely to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and genuine enlightenment. Great king, enter in this way and become a king! The reign of the king will not decline. The accumulations for enlightenment will also be perfected. Thus it was said. Bodhicitta, if divided, has two aspects: aspiring bodhicitta and engaging bodhicitta. The distinction between them is that the very mind that wishes to attain Buddhahood for the sake of sentient beings. That which is not grasped by the vows for accomplishing the accumulations of enlightenment is aspiring bodhicitta. That very mind, from whatever point onward is grasped by the vows, and engages in the activity of accomplishing the accumulations of enlightenment, is called engaging bodhicitta. Merely having aspiring bodhicitta makes one a Mahayana practitioner and is called a Bodhisattva. As it is said: In the instant of generating bodhicitta, those miserable ones bound in the prison of samsara are called the children of the Buddhas, and become objects of veneration for the world, including gods and humans. Thus it was said. The fruit of engaging bodhicitta, which takes practice as its essence, is exceedingly great. As it is said in the *Padmadāna-sūtra*: Whatever merit there is in bodhicitta, if it had form, it would fill the entire expanse of space, and it would be even greater than that. Thus it was said. It is also said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: From then on, even when asleep or heedless, the power of merit, unceasingly, will arise as vast as the sky. Thus it is. Furthermore, regarding the difference between aspiring and engaging bodhicitta, it is said in the *Gaṇḍavyūha-sūtra*: Son of good family, those sentient beings in the world of sentient beings who aspire in their minds to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, those sentient beings are difficult to find. Those sentient beings who genuinely engage in unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment are even more difficult to find than those. Thus it was said. Taking the vows of engagement is to generate that which has not been generated, to protect that which has been generated, and methods for restoring that which has been lost, etc., the details of which should be learned elsewhere. These have explained the conventional bodhicitta. Having thus generated conventional bodhicitta,

Therefore, one should strive to generate the supreme Bodhicitta. As stated in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva wishes to fully awaken to all phenomena, they should train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus it is said. The ultimate Bodhicitta is beyond the world, free from all elaborations, extremely clear, the ultimate stainless realm of experience, unwavering, like the flame of a lamp in a windless place. Its accomplishment comes from constantly respecting and diligently practicing Shamatha and Vipassana yoga for a long time. As explained in the Holy Samdhinirmocana Sutra: Thus, whether it is the Shravakas, the Bodhisattvas, or all the virtuous dharmas of the Tathagatas, whether worldly or transcendental, all should be known as the fruit of Shamatha and Vipassana. Thus it is said, therefore one should cultivate Shamatha and Vipassana. There are four aspects to this: the benefits of Shamatha and Vipassana, their causes and conditions, their individual nature, and the manner of training in them. First, all the worldly and transcendental qualities of the Great and Small Vehicles are the fruit of Shamatha and Vipassana. As the Samdhinirmocana Sutra states: Maitreya, whether it is the Shravakas, the Bodhisattvas, or all the virtuous dharmas of the Tathagatas, whether worldly or transcendental, all should be known as the fruit of Shamatha and Vipassana. Thus it is said. All the Samadhis of the three vehicles are also included within Shamatha and Vipassana. Again, that same sutra states: The Blessed One said, all the various Samadhis that I have taught of the Shravakas, the Bodhisattvas, and the Tathagatas, all of them should be known as included within Shamatha and Vipassana. Thus it is said. The afflictions to be abandoned and the manifest conceptual thoughts are suppressed, and the habitual seeds are individually destroyed, which are also the fruit of Shamatha and Vipassana. That same sutra states: If a being cultivates Vipassana and Shamatha, they will be liberated from the bonds of the lower realms and the bonds of signs. Thus it is said. Lower realms
