is, is the seed of what is to be abandoned. The bondage of characteristics is manifestation, and these are the abandonment of insight and quiescence in order. Second, the causes and conditions for quiescence: As the Ornament of the Sutras says: "The place where the wise practice, well-obtained and with a good dwelling, a good land and good friends, and endowed with the requisites for yogic bliss." Thus, abiding in a conducive place, not desiring fine and abundant food, clothing, and service, but being content with a little coarse sustenance, abandoning many activities such as medicine, astrology, farming, and commerce, and having pure morality without inherent faults, abandoning various conceptualizations such as desire. To enter quiescence, one must first be endowed with these accumulations. The accumulations for insight: As the Ornament of the Sutras says: "A spiritual friend who is tamed, peaceful, extremely peaceful, endowed with superior qualities, diligent, rich in scripture, who truly understands that nature, speaks well, is compassionate, and has abandoned weariness should be relied upon." One should rely on an excellent person who possesses such qualities, and having ascertained the sutras of definitive and interpretable meaning, one should seek extensively to hear much, and properly contemplate the meaning of what has been heard with scripture and reasoning, abandoning unsuitable foods and consuming suitable foods in moderation, which is knowing moderation in food. To enter insight, one must first rely on these accumulations. Third, the nature of quiescence and insight. The nature of quiescence: As the Explanation of the Intention Sutra says: "He dwells alone in solitude, abiding truly within, contemplating those dharmas that have been well considered, and with whatever mind he contemplates, with that mind he constantly contemplates within. Thus entering and thus abiding repeatedly, whatever arises as physical pliancy and mental pliancy is called quiescence, and thus a Bodhisattva should well seek a dwelling place." As it is said, the samadhi of one-pointedness of mind on the object of focus, endowed with physical and mental pliancy, is quiescence. The nature of insight: That very object of focus of quiescence, as it is

And it individually distinguishes all those phenomena, however many there are. It is the wisdom that enjoys. In that very sutra, it says: Having obtained that body that is extremely tamed and the mind that is extremely tamed, abiding in that very state, abandoning the aspects of the mind, just as the phenomena are thought of, within the mind, in the realm of experience of samadhi, one individually cognizes the images, and has faith in them. Thus, with respect to those images in the realm of experience of samadhi, distinguishing the meaning of what is to be known, extremely distinguishing, fully knowing, fully examining, being patient, desiring, differentiating, seeing, and discriminating—that is called insight (vipashyana). Thus, a Bodhisattva is skilled in insight. Furthermore, in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it is also said: "Calm abiding is the very one-pointedness of mind. Insight is truly individually cognizing." Thus, it is clearly stated. The venerable Maitreya also said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The name of Dharma is also these aggregates; know that calm abiding is the path; the path of insight is those meanings; know that it is discrimination." And, relying on truly abiding, in order to place the mind on the mind, and in order to extremely distinguish the Dharma, there are calm abiding and insight. Thus, it is proclaimed. There are three ways of learning each: the way of learning calm abiding, the way of learning insight, and the way of combining the two. In the first, there are two: how to meditate with what kind of bodily posture, and the actual explanation of the stages of the way of meditating. In that, the bodily conduct should possess eight qualities: either the full lotus posture or the half lotus posture is fine, it should be done that way. The eyes should not be too open or too closed, but look at the tip of the nose. The body should not be too upright or too bent, but straight like a scale, and one should sit with mindfulness placed within. The shoulders should also be placed straight. The head should be neither too high nor too low, and should not be tilted to one side, but placed straight from the nose to the navel. The teeth and lips should also be placed normally. The tongue should touch the upper palate. The breath going in and out should not be emitted with sound, or forcefully, or agitatedly, but should enter as slowly as possible. The hands should also be placed in the gesture of equipoise. Such a body
