Regarding the phenomena that change, is it acceptable to think, "This is me, this is mine, this is my possession"? Bhikshu, it is not like that. As it is said, from realizing the impermanence of conditioned phenomena, one then realizes that all contaminated things are suffering, and from that, one realizes the selflessness of the aggregates. Therefore, one should first meditate on impermanence. Impermanence is also of two types: continuous and momentary. Among these, continuous impermanence should be meditated upon in this way. As it is said in the sutra: "The three realms are impermanent, like autumn clouds; the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance; the life of a person is like lightning in the sky; it passes swiftly like water flowing down a steep slope." And as it is said in the Ratnavali: "The causes of death are many, and the causes of life are very few; even those are causes of death." As it is said, the life of a person is unstable, wavering, and unreliable, like a lamp in the wind or a bubble in flowing water. The causes of survival, such as food, clothing, and medicine, are very few and must be obtained with effort. The causes of death, such as internal and external adverse factors, diseases, and cliffs, are very many and can be approached without effort. Therefore, for those like us who have fallen into the clutches of the Lord of Death, there is no certainty of not dying. Not observing the state of one's own body and mind, but preparing for many years of future life, this behavior is ridiculed by the noble ones who understand its nature, and is also a source of laughter for the messengers of Yama who are about to devour oneself. As it is said in the Shataka: "He who has dominion over the three worlds, yet cannot be the master of his own death, and must inevitably fall asleep as usual, what could be worse than that?" Thus it is said. Therefore, the yogi should always maintain the thought that one's own body is unreliable, like a lamp in the wind or a bubble, and should abandon far away attachment to body and life, and the thought of immortality. Furthermore, the teacher said: "The first night of the hero among men, from where did the world dwell in the womb, from there onwards, from there

Indeed, without delay, one goes to the Lord of Death. It is said. The Hundred Verses also says: 'Having been born for the sake of dying, possessing the nature of going under the power of others, dying seems to be the thing to do, living seems not to be the thing to do.' It is said. All sentient beings like us are like livestock being led to the slaughterhouse by a butcher. From the moment we are born from the womb until we die, we are constantly approaching the Lord of Death without stopping for even a moment. Although this is the case, we do not think in this way, thinking, 'I will not die for a long time.' This is truly foolish. For example, for livestock waiting to be slaughtered, death is common to all, and even though they see each other being slaughtered one by one, the remaining ones lie down peacefully. Similarly, people know that death is common, and even though they see others dying, they are not afraid of death and hope to live. This is as foolish as livestock! Therefore, one should repeatedly keep the impermanence of death in mind and strive to meditate on the gross continuous impermanence. A yogi who meditates in this way will develop aversion to all contaminated things and will not be attached to them. And like someone whose head is on fire, they will be very diligent in virtuous practices. As it is said in the Hundred Verses: 'One who thinks, "I am going to die," for one who has this certainty, they will completely abandon attachment, and what fear is there of the Lord of Death?' It is said. After that, one should meditate on the subtle momentary impermanence. That is, the mind focuses on a momentary object, and on various different appearances. Therefore, like lightning and lamps, etc., because one experiences its instability, it is easy to realize that it is momentary. Just as sentient beings are, so are all conditioned phenomena, they are all momentary, because there is no obstacle to the destruction of a moment, and impermanence is only relative to birth. A moment is also the ultimate of time. It should be known that sixty-five moments pass in the time it takes to snap one's fingers. Furthermore, for anything that grows, if there is no growth in each moment of the mind, then the thought of wanting to live for a long time until years and months is meaningless and should not be done.
