Thus it is said: Obtaining conformity with others will lead to complete liberation from aging and death. Thus it was declared. Therefore, wishing to attain the wisdom that is free from all obscurations, one should seek insight (vipassanā) by relying on calm abiding (samatha), because the yoga of the union of calm abiding and insight can completely eradicate all obscurations. Therefore, in the "Explication of the Thought Sutra" (Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra), it is said: 'Whatever concentrations of the hearers, bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas I have shown in various forms, all of these should be understood as being included within calm abiding and insight.' Therefore, the yogi should diligently cultivate insight in order to attain calm abiding. Moreover, it is quickly accomplished by possessing the conditions for insight; therefore, one should first rely on the conditions for insight. What are the conditions for insight? They are relying on an excellent person, listening to the sacred Dharma, and proper attention. How does one rely on an excellent person? As it says in the Ornament: 'A spiritual friend who is tamed, peaceful, extremely peaceful, superior in qualities, diligent, rich in scripture, who has well realized reality, is eloquent, and possesses compassion, one should rely on such a one who has abandoned weariness.' Or, one who is learned, eloquent, compassionate, and able to endure the weariness of asceticism. What is listening to the sacred Dharma? It is listening with great reverence to the three precious collections of the Tathāgata, and to the pure treatises that serve as explanations of their intent. What is proper attention? It is properly ascertaining the meaning of the sūtras and treatises that have been heard, through scriptural authority and reasoning, and thereby determining them without doubt. Thus, the yogi who possesses the conditions for insight should cultivate the suchness of the two kinds of selflessness as an antidote to the two obscurations: by realizing the selflessness of the person in relation to the aggregates, one abandons the obscuration of afflictions, and by realizing the selflessness of phenomena, one abandons the obscuration of knowledge. Among these, one should first cultivate the selflessness of the person as an antidote to the obscuration of afflictions. Regarding this, in the "Entrance to the Middle Way" (Madhyamakāvatāra):

As it is said, all the faults of afflictions arise from the view of the aggregates. Having directly seen this with wisdom, the yogi, realizing that "I" is the object of these, prevents the self. Therefore, the yogi should contemplate: If the aggregates were the self, then it would be subject to arising and ceasing. If the self were other than the aggregates, then it would be without the characteristics of the aggregates. And as it is said: Not the aggregates, not other than the aggregates, where there are no aggregates, there is no that. The Tathagata is not possessed of aggregates, what is the Tathagata? Following these and others, one should carefully examine the aggregates to discern whether the self is one with or different from the aggregates. Having examined in this way, if one is certain that there is no self at all, then one should understand that the so-called "self" is merely an appearance of conceptual thought. One should not indulge in conceptual proliferation regarding any terms or concepts that rely on the self, but should focus single-mindedly on the truth of selflessness. Alternatively, one should meditate on the selflessness of the person by focusing on the sixteen aspects of the four noble truths. That is, one should examine in this way: all of this can be summarized into two
