And, for example, the category of narrating realizations, the category of such occurrences, the category of Jataka tales, the category of the extremely vast, the category of rare Dharma, the category of definitive establishment and exposition, all those that are explained to Bodhisattvas, the Bodhisattva should listen well, hold well, make it the meaning of speech, examine well with the mind, and after thoroughly understanding with sight, he should dwell alone in a solitary place, abide truthfully within. Whatever Dharma is well thought of, those themselves are what he attends to. With whatever mind he attends to, that mind he constantly attends to within. When he enters in that way and abides in it many times, that which arises as extreme suppleness of the body, that is called quiescence. Thus, the Bodhisattva should fully seek quiescence. As it is said, the yogi brings all the scriptures, such as the Sutra Pitaka, into suchness, and focuses on suchness. Having thus gathered everything into one nature, one should place the mind closely on any one of the Sutra Pitakas. Or, as the noble Samadhiraja Sutra says: "The body is like the color of gold, the protector of the world is beautiful everywhere, whoever's mind enters that object, that Bodhisattva is in meditative equipoise." As it is said, generate the body of the Victorious One, the color of gold, about a span high, with extremely clear manifestations, in the sky at the height of one's own line of sight, and focus on that. Finally, when the object becomes extremely clear, in the center of the eyebrows of that body, generate a white, shining white hair curl, about the size of a mustard seed, and focus the mind on that. When the mind is thus focused on the object, if it is oppressed by dullness and sleep, and one sees that the mind is sinking or suspects it will sink, one should remember or attend to the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, which are objects of extreme joy, or attend to the perception of light. After pacifying the sinking, one should make the mind extremely clear on that object in every way. Whenever the mind scatters outward and becomes agitated by ways of discriminating objects such as forms, or suspects it will become agitated.

At that time, one should bring to mind the characteristics of all conditioned phenomena, such as impermanence and suffering, and pacify distractions. With mindfulness and awareness, one should closely place the mind on the object of focus. When the mind is free from dullness and agitation, and spontaneously engages in focusing on the object, then one should relax the effort of applying antidotes and maintain equanimity. One should remain in such a state for as long as desired. Having thus familiarized oneself with shamatha, the yogi attains extreme pliancy of body and mind. The body becomes as light as a cotton fluff, and the mind becomes capable of being used as desired on the object of focus. At that time, one should recognize that shamatha has been accomplished. Mere shamatha without vipashyana can only suppress the afflictions, but cannot destroy the latent tendencies and so forth. This is because shamatha is merely one-pointedness on the object of focus, and does not have the power to discriminate reality. Therefore, it does not harm the root of the afflictions, which is the clinging to self. For that very reason, the noble *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* states: "Dhyana suppresses the afflictions, while wisdom destroys the latent tendencies." The noble *Samadhiraja Sutra* also states: "Although one may cultivate samadhi, it does not destroy the notion of self. Therefore, the afflictions are extremely rampant, like cultivating samadhi with negligence. If one individually analyzes the selflessness of phenomena, if one individually examines and cultivates it, that is the cause for attaining the fruit of nirvana. Any other cause will not bring about peace." The Bodhisattva Pitaka also states: "Those who have not heard the categories of teachings of the Bodhisattva Pitaka, who have not heard the Vinaya of the noble ones, and who are content with mere samadhi, fall into arrogance and conceit due to the power of pride. They are not completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and agitation. They are also not completely liberated from the aggregates of suffering. Taking this into consideration, the Tathagata...
