These are like reflections of the moon in water, appearing as birth, death, and so on in name, though without inherent existence. Previously, I suffered the pains of samsara because I had not realized such a Dharma nature. Just as I am, so are these sentient beings. Alas, how wonderful it would be if these sentient beings who have been my mothers could comprehend such a Dharma nature and be liberated from the bonds of attachment to apparent phenomena! One should think in this way. By cultivating compassion in this way, the mindstream transforms into the nature of compassion, and bodhicitta arises. After that, one should supplicate a qualified lama and take the supreme bodhicitta of aspiration and application. Thus, I shall liberate all beings. This generation of bodhicitta and vow will not be accomplished if it is separate from non-dual wisdom. Therefore, after that, one should strive to cultivate the ultimate bodhicitta, which is characterized by non-dual wisdom. This non-conceptual wisdom does not arise without calm abiding (shamatha). Vipashyana (insight) without calm abiding is like a candle flame stirred by the wind, unstable because it is stirred by the winds of conceptual thought. Therefore, the yogi should first cultivate calm abiding. This also arises from the collection of causes and conditions. Therefore, the yogi should rely on the conducive conditions for calm abiding. What are the conducive conditions for calm abiding? Dwelling in a suitable place, having few desires, being content, abandoning many activities, having pure moral conduct, and abandoning conceptual thoughts such as desire. Among these, dwelling in a suitable place is that which possesses five qualities. Like this, because clothing, food, and so on are obtained without difficulty, it is easy to obtain; because there are no unruly people or enemies, the place is good; because it does not cause illness, the land is good; because companions are the same in discipline and view, the companions are good; and because it is not crowded with many people during the day and the sound is small at night, it is a well-situated place. There is no pursuit of good and plentiful Dharma robes and alms, etc.

And, because it is enough to be content with just the crudeness of how it is obtained, the order is to have few desires and be content. What is abandoning many activities? Abandoning evil deeds such as farming and business, abandoning excessive mixing with householders and renunciates, and completely abandoning medicine and astrology, etc. What is pure morality? Both the Pratimoksha vow and the Bodhisattva vow are pure, and for all the objects of training included in the faults of self-nature and co-emergence, one does not violate them; if one violates them due to carelessness, one should quickly repent and act according to the Dharma. As it is said: Desires are the cause of generating decay, like the Kimpa fruit, as said by the Mighty One. Thus, for desires, one should also remember that in this life and the next, they will become many faults, and one should abandon the conceptual thoughts about them. Having accumulated the conditions for calm abiding in this way, one should then begin to practice it. That is, the yogi should first complete all the tasks that need to be done, and then in a place without the thorns of sound, I should place all beings in the essence of Bodhi. Having thus aroused the mind of Bodhi, one should prostrate to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions with the five-limbed prostration, and then in front of the images and statues of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, offer and praise as much as possible, confess one's sins, and rejoice in the merits of all beings. On a comfortable cushion, one should sit in the seven-point posture of Vairochana, and the breath should be exhaled and inhaled slowly, without making any sound, etc. Then, the yogi should place the mind closely on the object of calm abiding. And how is that? In the "Explication of the Thought Sutra," it says: "Bhagavan, how does one seek calm abiding completely, and be skilled in insight?" The Buddha said: "Maitreya, I have thus established the arrangement of the Dharma, namely: the Sutra section, the section of verses, the section of prophecies, the section of recitation, the section of self-utterances, the section of narratives."
