Secondly, to show that it is the definitive meaning, as the Bhagavan said, etc. "Unsurpassed" means: because there is no other wheel of Dharma above this. Therefore, there is no gap. The definitive meaning is: because here, existence and non-existence, etc., are shown separately, it is according to the words. Therefore, that is not the basis of dispute. How do those who consider the intermediate teaching to be of definitive meaning interpret this sutra? Those people think that wherever the doctrine of mere consciousness is shown, such as in this sutra, etc., all of those are explained as provisional meaning. How is it known that these are of provisional meaning? From scripture and reasoning. Among them, first is scripture, as it is said in the Noble Lankavatara Sutra: 'Just as a doctor gives medicine to a patient, similarly, the Buddha teaches the Dharma of mere consciousness to sentient beings.' Thus it is said. The necessity is: to refute the agent examined by other and one's own schools, such as the chief, atoms, Ishvara, etc., and the person, etc. Again, in that very sutra it says: 'The person, permanence, substance, as well as conditions and atoms, the chief, Ishvara, agents, I have taught as mere consciousness.' Because it is said thus. There is also reasoning, in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, etc., it is shown that only other-powered and mere consciousness exist. If that were the definitive, true meaning, then it should not be harmed by reasoning. Because, from the reasoning that will be explained below, the truly established consciousness that is established by reasoning cannot be examined. Therefore, in this sutra, the intention of saying that the intermediate teaching is of provisional meaning and the final teaching is of definitive meaning is: to gradually guide those who are afraid of emptiness that has an object, and to refute the agent and enjoyer other than mere consciousness in conventional truth, it is known by scripture and reasoning that it is said thus. Because it will be explained in detail below, it is not elaborated. Those who accept the Tathagatagarbha, other than consciousness, as permanent, and think that that is the intention of the final teaching, and then use this sutra to prove that the final teaching is of definitive meaning, it is like a noseless person boasting of beauty with borrowed ornaments. That view even contradicts the views of the great chariot schools that consider the final teaching to be of definitive meaning.

Because it is external. The reasons are explained in detail elsewhere. Having briefly mentioned how the Buddha taught the Dharma, next we will briefly discuss how those who collected these scriptures collected them. There are two types of collections: the collection of the Vinaya Pitaka of the Hinayana and the collection of the Vinaya Pitaka of the Mahayana. The first also has three types: one fundamental collection and two temporary collections. The first is that the fundamental collectors were the great Arhat Kashyapa, the attendant Ananda, and Kashyapa, etc. Not long after the Blessed One passed into Nirvana, in the center of five hundred Arhats in Rajagriha, as it appears in the Sutra of the Buddha's Correct Collection of the Dharma, first was "Thus have I heard," and finally, praises were made to what the Blessed One had said, and in the middle, connections and relationships, etc., were properly and accurately collected, thus accurately collecting the three Pitakas of the Hinayana. Then, one hundred years after the Blessed One passed into Nirvana, the monks of Vaishali damaged the Buddha's teachings with ten unlawful things, making them impure. At this time, seven hundred Arhats, including the venerable Name, refuted the ten unlawful things and performed an auspicious Uposatha, which is known as the second collection. These two collections come from the minor rules of the Vinaya. The third collection is only well-known in the treatises and does not come from the Vinaya. Before the second collection, there was no division into separate schools. Afterwards, the work of Mara greatly increased, and some doctrines of dispute arose, leading to the division of schools. After the schools split, the third collection appeared. Because all the schools were collected into the Buddha's teachings based on the Sutra of the Prophecy of King Krikri's Dream, this is known as the third collection. So, when did these various schools split? And how many types are there? On this, there are three views in the Tarka-jvala. The first is that after the Buddha, the Blessed One, passed completely into Nirvana for years
